I seem to remember a pass going through Carlos Carson’s hands in the end zone late in the game that would have won it. Is that correct or am I misremembering?

It was Greg LaFleur.

Ultimately Coach Charles McClendon's late 3rd quarter play calling as the extended David Woodley led drive culminating in a 15 yard gain.

A draw play led by LSU fullback Jude Hernandez which resulted in FIRST AND GOAL ON THE SOUTERN CAL 2 YARD LINE. The first & goal opportunity on the two yard line was the certain death of USC's chances to overcome LSU. This assuming the Tigers could score 7 points not settle for another 3 point field goal. Mac was strictly a defense first coaching practitioner. Charles McClendon squandered all three opportunities to punch in a touchdown from the 2 yard line. He refused give the football to Jude Hernandez again. He did not give the football to quarterback David Woodley again who would have easily scored had he run a sweep or outside play of some kind using his legs.

Charles Mac was a defense first mind strictly. It cost him this USC victory. Mac took "defense" to the extreme. The score at the start of the fourth period would have been LSU 16 USC 3 with one quarter to go and the Tigers asses on fire!

From a 2009 article in the Reveille...the pass was to Willie Turner.

LSU managed one last gasp. A personal foul on the ensuingkickoff gave the Tigers the ball at their own 42-yard line.Ensminger found Robert DeLee for a 28-yard gain to the USC 30 witheight seconds to go. On the next play Ensminger looked for WillieTurner in the end zone, but the pass glanced off Turner'sfingers and fell incomplete.

The Tigers tried one more bomb into the end zone, but it wasbatted down as time expired.

Now that we're getting a home and home with UT I really hope we get one with USC soon enough.
I rank TEXAS over Ohio State, Michigan, UCLA, Nebraska, Wisconsin, Alabama, Oklahoma, Penn State, Notre Dame,

TEXAS is BIGGGGI

TEXAS versus MIAMI = atomic war

USC was loaded with Charles white (heisman winner) and Marcus Allen in the backfield. They had Ronnie Lott and Jeff Fisher at safety. Brad budde and Carlos monzon on OL. Hoby brenner was TE. Paul McDonald at qb. Crazy.

Thanks for this post as it has brought back many fond memories about that 79 season, my sophomore year at LSU. That USC game was the loudest EVER in Tiger Stadium. We were definitely screwed by the zebras on the no call false start and the face mask call against Benji Thibideaux.

That 3-0 loss to bama was biggest 3-0 blowout in football history.

If LSU had won that game(FSU24-LSU19). Bobby Bowden would've been the next coach at LSU.
Bowden always said this. I was at that game too. LSU was cruising along nicely in the first half and the turning point was an LSU fumble right before halftime. What if?........Maybe it was not meant to be.

Charlie Mac may have overstayed his welcome but I will give him credit for one thing. That 1979 team played hard for him until the end.

Inexplicably, you forgot to mention Anthony Munoz.

One of the first seasons I remember. I remember everything '76 and beyond. Charles Alexander, Coach Mac, James Britt, Al Richardson, Carlo Carson, David Woodley, Steve E, Willie Teal, Tommy Frizzell, Hokie Gajan...

His players loved him and would run through a bonfire and a wall and back again for him. It always known how much he was respected by players and other coaches. Like Dinardo and Les he was stubborn and his offenses left a lot to be desired in bowl games and vs top 10 opponents. But Cholly Mac did the best he could. He was considered a defensive mastermind in his day.

HA HA Great hyperbole! No it wasn't. Bama could move the ball but could not punch in except for a 27 yard TD. They had 270 something yards with only 26 rushing. They missed two FGs and had a late fourth quarter fumble. It was kind of like the 0-10 game in 2016. So close but yet so far always. There is no such thing as a 0-3 blowout.

Just so you youngsters know, Bama has been stealing Louisiana talent for a long time. Wilcox was an AA DB at Bama, but a legendary high school QB from Louisiana (Bonnable) Turned down LSU to play for Bear.

As I recall, the starting center at BAMA that year was from Louisiana as well.

I was at both games. Charles White shot me the finger coming out of the visitors locker room after I yelled he sucked.LOL
We got robbed that day and that was considered one of the greatest college O-lines of all time. The Bama game was frustrating as hell. I don't think we crossed the 50 all night. And it was cold and rainy. Was only 17 with my dad so wasn't boozing it up yet.

My 2nd year at LSU. The USC game atmosphere was unlike anything I ever experienced in TS.

Even though the stadium only held 79K, it felt & sounded like 179K were there that night.

The noise when SC had the ball only slightly dipped between plays, then ramped up to ear-splitting level when they came out of the huddle.

Damn shame the Tigahs couldn’t hold on for the W.

Easy now. Its a nice story, but Florida 2007 when announced that Stanford beat USC was epic for sure, as was most of the game.
