Fury- Don't mention the words 'Drop LB' ever again...I think I started breaking out in hives from Tepper flashbacks....

Hmmm. what about the more than 50% of the time we aren't playing against the spread? Should we just gear up to stop the spread offenses? How do we gear up to be able to play against both successfully?

You just have to be multiple more than ever.

I'm not a big fan of tweeners. More often then not they end up being too small to play LB or too slow to play S.

bullshite

in the modern game - especially in a conference like the SEC - OLBs with speed and athleticism are far more useful than power LBs who hold their ground at 240+ lbs

as long as you have some bulk in the middle to stuff the run from tackle to tackle you don't need your other backers carrying all of that weight

this ain't the 50s where you have to defend the power sweep with pulling guards and full backs week in and week out ...today's best OLBs and DEs are ones with a speed game and can run to the ball and cover a lot of ground on the perimeter

I'm all for Chavis's philosophy ..that's the one thing he brings that I appreciate more than any ...he understands LB play, and let's face it - we have not really had that, especially as of late

Which Tiger Safety would like to see meet Tebowe in the line.

any of them as long as they form tackle and take him low ...McCray, Loston, Coleman, Jones, Hatcher all are plenty strong and physical enough to take him down

where you frick up is when you try to jump on his back and get dragged 3 yards like Tyson Jackson

Smaller, speedier LBs may help against UF but may hurt against teams like Bama and Ole Miss

not really ...it's not like Ingram is Christian Okoye ...and I saw McCluster out at The Library in Oxford not long ago... no Safety would have trouble bringing him down ..and Branden Bolden shouldn't be a problem for any Safety we have

I think this is a myth

Chavis Gets It
I'm liking DC Chavis already. He says he's bringing his SAM strongside LB position to our defense, where he uses safety-sized LB's, including ex-safeties, at the strongside LB position.

Sounds like a "Drop" Linebacker to me.

Do a Google search for "Lou Tepper" and "Complete Linebacking."........

Baker fits the description of the position really well with his size/speed.
So where does this leave Cutrera, Riley, and Sheppard?

We will defend both ways, just like on offense, we won't be pure spread or pure pro style. Miles has shown and demonstrated this over and over again but the Rantards still beleive the offensive and defensive philosophies are going to radically change. We'll do both on offense, and both on defense, depending on whom we're playing.

Playing nickel defense with 2 corners, a FS, and 2 strong safeties excites you people?
