That very well could be the issue with the O-Line. With no bread and butter play to run they end up having few reps with many formations and variations. If the line of scrimmage pass to LaFell is our "bread and butter" play, then it is going to be a long season.

No one has a problem with 4-8 passing plays...the problem is the 3 and outs, especially the 2nd half stretch in the Vandy game...i'd rather not see those in conference play, especially on drives where we have the chance to put the game away...

You are gonna see 3 and outs from every SEC team at times...nature of the beast.

Never enough offense. Needs to score and keep scoring the entire game. Expect if offense don't the other teams offense will.

But not on consecutive drives, much less 3 or 4 drives in a row. I'm not saying we need points every time, but we at least need the ability to chew up some clock and let the D rest...

I can never tell what Crowton is setting up. It's more like just run a bunch of plays that don't have a core belief or don't relate.

I think at this point in the season he is just throwing a lot out there to see how players do together and how plays work. AS the season progresses, THEN you will see more "set up" plays. I mean its not like we really needed anything special to beat our first 3 opponents.

I think one play that LSU is determined to run correctly and try to make opponents stop is the bubble screen. We all have seen enough to puke. But, when I watch football over the weekend, college and the NFL, there it is, all those teams throwing the bubble screen.

I also think, as the early season becomes middle of the season, LSU shrinks the playbook. Then, by the time the bowl game is played, they have those plays down so pat that no one (at least in the Miles' era) has been able to stop.

Good work for a think piece Carl.

Great article Carl! This seems to be what is causing concern for so many of the LSU faithful. We don't really have an identity on offense.

The line that caught my attention was "The third LSU team in three years to begin the season with a first year Quarterback". Whoa!! That is interesting. Let's give Jefferson time to earn respect from his teammates. His teammates seem to be buying into his personality under game conditions. Team chemistry should continue to grow. The Quaterback position is more about leadership, athleticism aside. As Coach Miles would say, "I like my Quarterback".

There are plays that we always seem to run every game, with maybe one or two variations in them, throughout the year. Some are more basic than others, and some you will see multiple times in a game.

Another great piece, Carl. I believe the suggested plan would work. LSU has enough talented, diverse & experienced players for a "pick your core plays" approach and they'd be efficient in whatever system implemented.

Is Week 5 too late to make those changes? LSU has so many great and potentially great players at the skill positions. Why? Because they recruited them and they want to play as soon as they get here. Remember Randle? You know, "it's me or D. Benton?" I'd much rather have Randle, but let's use the guy.

I mean, why in the heck did they get R. Shepard, the top dual-threat QB in the country? That guy needs to be on the field as a triple-threat weapon, playing significant minutes w/Jefferson still starting & both doing what they do best (think Fla. w/Leak & Tebow in his freshman year, only with Shepard being faster & more elusive).

I don't care how long Fla. has to prepare for us. If they & LSU's other SEC foes have to worry about both approaches (even if they each employ a scaled-back paybook), that favors LSU big-time. Especially if both QBs perform well & within their respective skill-sets.
Shepard can throw the ball and Jefferson shouldn't be running so many option plays & running on keepers in which he's risking sharing a hospital room with A. Hatch.
Shepard's electric & will prove it, but he has to get some playing time. Plus, if JJ goes down & out, in comes J. Lee, w/Miles justifying picking Lee (or 6-picking) over Shepard 'cos he has more experience, blah-blah, woof-woof.
Anywho, thanks Carl--as always--for a great read and a topic worthy of meaningful discussion.
