It was worse than that! You're being kind. Bert sat on the pine until late in his Junior year...
Exact same thing happened to Mike Hillman in his Junior year in 1968.
Then in 1969 Hillman guided the Tigers to an almost perfect season, their only loss coming from Archie Mannings's Ole Miss 26-23. LSU led 23-12 in the 4th qtr and Mac was playing the second string QB (Buddy Lee) and even inserted his 3rd string QB (Butch Duhe) in the game in the 4th qtr. Duhe fumbled an exchange with the RB deep in Ole Miss territory and lost the ball. Mac opened the door wide open for OM to get back in the game and win it. What a disaster!
