Doesn't Auburn just have a pipeline to Australia and just preps their Olympic team?

I think the Bolts team folded about 10 years ago after Coach Bower left.

I think it has been longer than 10 years for the Bolts/Bower. He was at Elmwood for a few years after the Bolts and he has not been at Elmwwod for several years. Bower was a great coach but had issues with older swimmers that did not want to do thing his way. I swam for him for about 4-5 years and his teams dominated the state for about 30 years.

but if LSU is serious about competing in the SEC in swimming, a new or seriously renovated facility is a must
Has there been any noise about a new facility? I was at LSU when they built the natatorium. I don't even remember where they swam before it was built - maybe Huey P. Long fieldhouse but it might've been somewhere else. At the time it seemed like a nice facility; they held a national diving competition there shortly after it opened and got to watch Louganis dive which was after he'd won quite a few Olympic medals if I'm remembering right. That's been over 20 years ago so I'm guessing it's now outdated. Any plans to upgrade or build a new facility? I know they have some plans for the facilities but wasn't sure what's next on the list. Tennis stadium also needs a huge renovation or re-location. Much, much older than the natatorium and pitiful compared to the competition out there.

I actually took a look at the swim teams stats yesterday, and I was swimming at those times when I was 15/16.. So I called asking for their walk-on times for this fall.. The woman said she'd send me an e-mail, but I haven't heard back.. she was also quick to inform me they had no scholarships. I replied by saying "That's not why I'm interested. It's for the sport itself"

Anyways.. If I do get those times sent, I'll look into walking-on sophomore year.

I belive Robert Looney was the last truly elite swimmer from LA in years and he went to UT I think. In the last four SEC Zones championship, LA is been in the last four states with MS, WV and SC every year.

I haven't kept up with USS the last few years... when I was swimming though there was deep talent. Robert went to Auburn though as well... good friend of mine. Nobody wants to come here with our piece of shite facility...except foreigners.

Hell when I was there our locker rooms were an old storage closet... didn't even have showers. It's truly pathetic... I believe the only hope might be that Miles sticks around, they sign his daughter and then maybe some money will be injected into the program.

Yes, while the pool itself is considered fast, the LSU Nat. may easily be the worst swimming facility in the whole SEC. No doubt about it, there are all kinds of unflattering nick-names for it in swimming circles...

As far as recruiting, I know that the women's team has been improving some over the past few years, and that there is a swimmer from Birmingham that signed to start swimming with them next year..

Bolts are long gone. Dick Bower lives in The Woodlands. Crawfish Aquatics have been winning state championships left and right and won this year short course championship by over 900 points. They have over 500 swimmers in two cities (Baton Rouge and Lafayette).

As for the LSU swim program, we use to swim in the old Huey Long pool prior to the early 1980’s. If you think the Nat is bad, try swimming in a bubble enclosed pool that was so hot and humid it would literally rain inside. You had to worry about pulling the bubble off the bottom of the pool when some airhead left the doors open and let the pressure out of the enclosed facility.

The chlorine was so strong you could barely breath. The shallow end was almost too shallow to hold a meet. Taller swimmers worried about hitting their heads on a flip turn.

From my understanding LSU has selected a replacement (interim or permanent-I am not sure yet). For LSU representing Louisiana as the “Flagship” university, it is embarrassing with the quality of facilities they have. It is either hot in the summer or freezing cold in the winter.

As far back as I can remember LSU has always short-changed the programs, even when we had Ricky Meader swimming. He was a true Olympic probability straight from Baton Rouge (and one heck of a nice guy). That is until Jimmy Carter screwed up his 1980 Olympic dreams.

Sam Freas brought LSU an SEC championship and from what I have observed, Adam was not aggressive in recruiting in state. You would think with Smacker Miles, who is a solid college prospect; LSU would consider better support for this sport. Someone with some pull, please impress upon the current AD to properly fund facilities and commit to making LSU swimming an elite program before it gets shut down.

As less than a year retired lsu swimmer (not my account), the facilities are our worst asset, other than the coach that was just fired. The pool's lack of A/C and heater are the main problem other than keeping in-state recruits. Klein and Looney are two notable recruits lost in the last few years(both won NCAA championship with AU). With a good coach LSU could hold its own in the SEC. Schmitt was the biggest arse i've ever met; I swam for him for four years. The swimmers didn't respect him, and with a good coach LSU, coach vie for its' first and only SEC title since '88(Schmitt was in school).
And yes, the volleyball team is good.

It would probably take a new facility. The one they use was thrown together fast in the 80's for some sort of games being hosted by Baton Rouge. LSU doesn't have the facility to keep up with the powers in the SEC.

Any word yet on that interim/permanent person is? I hope they bring in a top caliber coach and get the facilities up to par. If they can't build a new one right away, then they at least should upgrade the current one with the necessary ac/heat and anything else that could be added until they get that new one. I just absolutely hate that we've fallen so far behind the other SEC schools. Auburn? Auburn's not even THE state school in Alabama and we're behind them? Pretty sad. I hope Alleva can get some positive changes underway for minor sports as well as major ones. As LSU alums and fans we should all support ALL LSU athletics programs and strive for excellence for every team that we field!!

the only solution is to completely tear down the current wall structure... trust me I have thought about this a million times during the thousands of hours I spent in there. The walls are made of cinder blocks of which you can see through the cracks in some of them. It would not be economically feasible to add central heat and air due to the lack of insulation.

If they could keep the pool in place while tearing out the shell and rebuilding around it with real stands (not bleachers) and real locker rooms, that would be great. I don't know if that's cost effective though vs. just building a whole new facility.

Either way a new facility is the only hope to return to whatever glory we had... late 80's and 90's (we were top 15-20 consistently when I was swimming).

DaBeerz, whatever happened with Ricky Meador? Wasn't he the coach during that time? Never really knew what happened. Did he leave, get canned? Did a search on him not to long ago wondering about some of the coaches that were there in my day and looks like he's still in the BR area. I remember him as an assistant coach in the late 80's.

Well, with a couple of up and coming swimmers of my own, I hope that a new, improved coach is the first step to building an S&D team at LSU... the next REALLY needs to be facilities!!
