That's what happens when you are an older fan and remember how many times we were supposed to win and didn't. The younger fans don't remember those days. Through it all we are here.

I agree, but it's worse than that. Even when it's fair weather people are bitching. We just have a larger percent of dumb asses. Therefore they all think they know more than the coach etc. Uninformed bunch of douches it what we have.

We are not "fair weather". Jesus that's so wrong
Correct..we've a large contingent of fringe fans.
Fringe fans pull for LSU because they are the only show in town. They jump on the bandwagon for the "HIGH" of being a winner. When that high is gone, so are they. Other LSU fans are mercurial. They are extremely optimistic of pessimestic depending on the circumstance of the team. The Saints fans fit into that category also, but aren't as passionate. I find the younger LSU fans aren't as invested as the older fans who went through the lean years. They are spoilled and expect a winner.

Believe it or not, real NY Yankee fans are not fair-weather...not AT ALL.
The problem is that for every 20 Yankee fans you see, maybe one of them is what I'd call "real"

Has the most 'homer' radio host, no doubt. How does Moscona have an afternoon drive show and not mention this Hill story? I dont need the scandalous rumors or all day talking about it. But, never once mentioning this would be like the Advocate not running the article. No credibility.

I found fair-weather friends other places I've lived.
In the early 2000s, the Children of the Corn were obsessed w/ their baseball team when it was a regular in the NCAAs & went to the CWS in '01 & '02. They were in the top 10 for attendance for several yrs back then. Since Van Horne left, the program went into the toilet & is now irrelevant in the Big 10, a very weak baseball conference. Their attendance has nose-dived.
Also, their basketball attendance is a joke. Visiting teams like Kansas & Creighton always bring more fans to Lincoln. The season tix were on $99, no matter which seats a fan wanted.
If it weren't for the fact their FB stadium is medium-sized (< 80K seats), their ballyhooed sell-out streak would've ended during the losing yrs under Bill Callahan. People were selling their tix for less than face value or just giving them away in those seasons, if they bothered to brave the cold games in Nov.

There are fair weather fans everywhere you go but I think other demographics from our state more accurately reflect our fair weather fans. We are a state with terrible educational standards and achievements and a large portion of our population does not even attend college much less graduate. Also we have fewer of the self driven successful people, those whose don't go to college but start successful careers.
Secondly a large portion of our fan base don't understand football at the degree to understand that there will be hiccups, there will be losses and the like. We know all those people who say they should throw more and they would win or why doesn't this guy start or yeah I can call all the plays from my couch.
People also don't understand things like football recruiting. Just because a kid lives even in Baton Rouge and is a stud doesn't mean he wants to go to LSU. Most kids want to leave home for college and experience new things, why would it be different for athletes. Miles averages 10 wins a year, has a NC already and has done a good job keeping us out of scandals and graduating players in top 10 of the country and 2nd in SEC.
Guys failing drug tests and getting into bar fights is not indicitative of a "Thug U". It's called college and these are young people. I think there is also a bit of jealously from those people who didn't attend a certain university or any for that matter to those fans who did. At least I saw it first hand in a couple small towns.

quote:I had to look this one up. Actually, they had almost 75,000 at that game.
Let's see- Auburn, two years removed from a national championship in football, barely cleared 50k in actual attandance against New Mexico State last year.
That is the textbook definition of fair-weather.
I can't think of any fanbases in the conference that I'd feel comfortable calling "fairweather". Even Ole Miss has a decent crowd in that high school stadium of theirs, and they generally don't start to thin out until just after halftime.

No...not even close...but just because some of us don't sugarcoat it when we see either bad play calling or poor clock management,or lack of execution, does that make us fair weather fans when we point it out?

Before 2003 Championship
78.4% true loyal fans
13.3% Fair weather fans
8.3% Corporate weasels
After 2007 Championship
58.6% true loyal fans
33.1% fair weather fans
8.3% Corporate weasels
This proves more fair weather fans today.

This is just my personal opinion ....but I've been a season ticket holder going on 15 years and made plenty of games before that.....it seems to me the younger fans are more into tailgating and not as much into following the program.....while there are plenty of knowledgable fans young and old that are very much into the game there are a lot more people In the stadium that are on there phones texting and worried about beating traffic .....most of these people can't name more than a handful of players on the team but they are quick to give an uninformed and asinine opinion when the team falls short.

People bitching about fair weather fans is the root of all of LSU sports' problems IMO.

I can say this from reading this site, I can't imagine another fanbase who bitches more about their own fanbase.

Remember the Gumps during the Dubose years? They were no where to be seen. Now they're all over the place...even in Baton Rouge.
