Yea I was a little confused about all the scoop talk. Even in the standard triple option I still think you cut backside. I don’t see any way a tackle could scoop to a 2-tec on a triple option dive. The only way that could happen is if you combo blocked it, and that’s too slow for the guard to get up to a backer on such a quick hitting play like the dive. Most importantly, though, I don’t even think you need to do it. Like you mentioned, I would absolutely just cut the backside tackle unless the tackle is some sort of freak of nature. I’d have a serious talk with my QB and FB if our dive is routinely getting stuffed by a backside tackle.

Right on...That's why so many (HS & College)teams run the option...simple cut blocking schemes and simple reads.

Not to mention, combo-ing on the D Line on an option play can be like giving an LB a free killshot on the QB. Not good if you plan to keep running that option.

And speaking of QB running on the option, if I have to watch JJ belly out on every option play again this year, I am going to hurl. For God's sake, get your shoulders north and south and attack your read downhill and make him commit! That's why LSU's option sucks.

LOL yeah must be Glenn Dorsey on the weakside DT.

I wouldn't say it's a Gimmick Offense. It's tripple option combined with some single wing. Standard passroutes with a fast tempo. Multiple formations with base plays.

Yea I’ll never forget a healthy Dorsey against Auburn. When he took their backside guard (don’t remember his name), through him in the backfield, scraped down the line, and kill the running back I almost had a heart attack. One of the most dominant individual plays I’ve ever seen in football.

And yea people freak about us running the option so much. I have no problem with us running the option. Personally I think it’s an awesome mix-up to keep defenses off-balance (see Ryan Perrilloux in 2007). What I do have a problem with, however, is seeing Jefferson run the option. Watching Jefferson run the option is one of the most painful things in sports. I’ve never seen someone so casual about the option.

The option is predicated on pressing and attacking the defense. Like you mentioned, you HAVE TO attack the defense vertically if you’re going to be successful in the option. If you continue to go horizontal like Jefferson does without ever attacking vertically you allow defenders to play both men without ever committing to one, essentially destroying the entire premise of the option. The minute you get around the tackle’s butt you’re to turn North-South, period.

I hate it so so so so so so zsso sososso sososos sosos ososos sos so so so sos much!

I don't think they are as "gimmicky" as people think. They run zone plays, but they do it from different sets. The blocking schemes are still the same. The reads are still the same. They are fun to watch, in my opinion, b/c of the temp and they have skill players that run it well (in short, they are well coached). A good example of this was Auburn last year. They are not very exotic at all. They run zone blocking schemes, but their favorite play was a lead play (w/ Newton running it). Both teams make it look more exotic b/c they have lots of motion, they use their QBs like running backs, and this allows them to shift their running backs all over the place. But in the end, you can put your backs wherever you want, send whomever you want into motion, and give the ball to whomever, but you still have to run the rock behind the biggins up front. We are going to eat their fricking o-linemen up and prevent them from getting to the next level. Our defensive guys can match their offensive guys speed for speed. I think it will be close in the beginning, but by halftime, we will pull away. Book it, bitches.

What makes an offense "gimmicky"? Is anything other than I-formation a gimmick? Oregon plays fast. Seems like it's just their style of play. And how can anyone label the triple option "gimmicky"? It's about 80 years old.

If a team shuts down Oregon, Oregon is screwed. Just like if a team shuts down LSU from running between the tackles, LSU is screwed (a la 2009).

Have you looked at Oregon's second half defense numbers? Oregon hunkers down in the second half. If it's close at half, I'd expect it to be close until the end. Remember that we caught up wtih Auburn in the second half. Oregon plays better than any other team fatigued. That is a byproduct of our system.

What is more likely is LSU taking a lead and sitting on it until the end. An LSU victory would look more like your WVU game last year - Just my two bits.

The problem for LSU is this. I think everyone recognizes the best way to beat Oregon is

1) Keep their offense off the field/make them go 3 and out as much as possible, and

2) Keep your offense on the field, giving your D a rest

I think LSU can do #1 as well as anyone in the country, at least at first. The problem is that I'm not at all confident in our O's ability to stay on the field.

I can see that becoming a real problem late in the game.
