Some old timers have told me that he was bad at getting the yardage right on many calls.
The player would score, and JF had him "At the 30.....At the 25....At the 20....At the fif-teeeeenn...At the 10....At the 5......Touch-doooooowwwwnnnn!"
Drove my Dad nuts.
But JF had a great voice and loved the Tigers - just as does Hawthorne.

JF was much better than JH

To be totally honest, as much as I liked him, John Ferguson did have his moments. Such as..."Here goes Alexander (Charles) hustling around right end, slips one tackler and charges ahead for a yard"! But the one thing about him was his vast knowledge of Tiger Athletics as a whole. He knew players back in the Tinsley era which was 30 years before he became the "Voice of the Tigers". Hawthorne is not only ignorant of the history of Tiger football before he became the announcer he can't remember things that happened since he started calling games. His lack of knowledge was evident in the "You Know Me" questions which he NEVER got right. Thank goodness for Doug Moreau who brings some knowledge and sanity to the booth.

You guys are way too tough on JF and JH. They both made mistakes but overall they were and are great. Don't believe me. Try listening to some of the other guys around the SEC. Listen to NASCAR boy at Bama...........he's horrible.

I grew up listening to John Ferguson. He was the best! He and Walter Hill made a great team.

I remember when wjbo would have the "Pick of Dixie" broadcast during the day on Saturday. It would be other teams in the SEC and I listened to Stan Torgensen from Ole Miss, Jack (?) Crystal for Miss. St. and John Forney did Bama games. These guys were great and one reason was they knew the history of their schools much John Ferguson did for LSU. It was great listening to stories of players and events that happened years before the game they were broadcasting. It is a shame that some in the business know very little about the history of the school they are associated with. Again this is my biggest gripe about Hawthorne. He would have done well to purchase Pete Finneys or Dan Hardestys books about Tiger Football then at least he would have known who some of the greats of LSU were.

Who did call the games befor John Ferguson? Was it Sid Crocker? I know he was the anouncer at the stadium during the period Mr. Ferguson called the games, and at the basketball games before Bill Bornnet(sp?).

Ferguson was about as knowledgeable and competent on play-by-play, as Hawthorne (meaning, not so much). However, Ferguson had a freaking GREAT voice for radio.
Ergo, your assessment is correct.

The guy was horrible as a play by play guy. Yes people there was someone worse than Hawthorne.
It was very difficult to show true animation describing a Cholly Mac offense.

I think Frank Hoffman at ULM is one of the best.

John Ferguson was our eyes to LSU football on WWL. I use to sit on the highest hill in my car in Tulsa Ok and listen to him call the games. He may not have been the best, but the little bit I can tolerate listening to Jim Henderson does not even compare. Henderson is the most negative announcer I believe I have ever heard. I can not believe LSU does not hear that and remove him for his on sake and certainly the sake of his listeners.

JF had a great voice. He loved LSU, but I can remember riding in the car with my Dad, who would get so pissed trying to figure out what was going on, after JF would say something like, " That will be a 25 yard loss for the Tigers, after their incomplete attempt at the interception."
I do miss that voice...
