Gotta go with "about the same." Saban won an SEC title in 2001 (which was a little bit of a fluke given 3 conference losses) and a national title in 2003 and then finished with a 9-3 season in 2004 that included a narrow loss in the Cap One Bowl. Miles' teams showed more consistency from 2005 - 2007 than Saban's did but the 2007 national title could be considered a bit of a fluke due to the 2 losses. The last 2 seasons have not been top flight (not unlike 2002 for Saban) and the most recent season was 9-4 with a narrow loss in the Cap One. That's about as close as you can get.

has the level of the football program at LSU gone UP or DOWN since Miles 1st year?

Overall, including all factors, the program is in worse shape today than it was in 2005, so DOWN is the only reasonable answer. 2010 will be the first year since 2003 that we do not start the season in the top 10 in the polls.

Some very creative spinning from the Miles Minions. I have to hand it to you guys ... you are LOYAL with a capital L.

The program is down from when Saban left and Miles took over. This is not even debatable.

Whether Miles can bring it back again is a legitimate question. Certainly, there is enough on the pro-Miles side to make an argument on his behalf. That said, to say that the program, as it stands TODAY, with a .500 record in conference over the last two years, is level or up from where Saban left it is laughable.

It is difficult to take you guys seriously, when you won't even concede the obvious.

Well, first of all, the Capital One Bowl that year was irrelevant. Teams who lose their coach before the bowl games typically fare very poorly in their bowls, so that game really was no indication of the state of the program. Also, anybody could see that 2004 was a ONE-YEAR anomaly because of the QB situation, but the team was very strong in all other areas and Jamarcus Russell was an obvious superstar in the making.

Comparing to now, we have a QB who MIGHT be improved, but also might not, and and will certainly never be a #1 overall draft pick caliber player like we had following the 2004 season. MANY other areas of the team are big question marks. The offensive and defensive lines are very uncertain right now, and of course they are the key to everything on their respective sides of the ball.

So, while the on-paper results of 2004 and 2009 are pretty similar, the state of the program going forward today is drastically different to, and worse than, what it was on this date in 2005.

The only possible reasonable answer is DOWN.

Apart from recruiting, has the level

How many first round draft choices did we have at the end of 05 and 06?
How many do we expect to have this year and next?

We see how well he's working out as the #1 pick. ND made him that, nothing else.

no doubt in my mind the PROGRAM is UP. this past year's team was down, the PROGRAM is much better off now, than when LM took over. Everything considered, this seems pretty obvious to me.

Everyone wants to remember the Saban years as being this dominant time period that Les Miles came in and shatted all over.

No, the Saban years were a period of building dominance that Les Miles enjoyed the fruits of for three years and eventually derailed. There was a lot of work to be done in Saban's first three years, which led to his winning only eight games in 2000 and 2002. 2001 was pretty miraculous given how soon it came.

By 2003, the pieces were in place and, after a ONE-YEAR blip in 2004 because of the QB situation (and we still legitimately went 10-1 in the regular season and won the west that year, but had the Auburn game stolen from us), the program was in position to go full steam ahead in 2005 and thereafter.

recruiting has stayed strong,

On paper in February, yes, but on the field in the fall, not so much. Attrition is a huge problem, and that goes back to recruiting. Signing problem players like Perrilloux, Odom and others is a recruiting issue. Also, something is not going well in the player development area, as these highly rated players and classes simply aren't getting the job done on the field.
quote:

The last two seasons were down from Miles' first three, but not abysmal.

"Not abysmal" is not the standard LSU should strive for. The 2008 team was the worst LSU football team since 1999. The 2009 team would maybe have beaten the 2000 team or the 2002 team (depending on what stage of the season they played, as 2002 was great until Mauck got hurt). So, the last two seasons, especially because they occurred consecutively, indicate the program is in decline. An occasional down year happens to most schools, but the true powerhouses bounce right back the next year. In 2009, we didn't bounce back from an 8-5 season the previous year like we did in 2003.

Well, the point is that he was performing well enough to be the #1 pick. Jefferson will never be considered for that, not even close.

I don't. If Spurrier was still at Florida, there is NO talk of either Saban or Meyer. Game passed Spurrier by did it? Yeah, dry that one out & fertilize your lawn with it.

Saban could not beat Spurrier at Florida. In fact, Saban's LSU "Defense" gave up much more yardage to Spurrier, than Lou Tepper's LSU "Defense".

Tepper 1998 & 1999
Saban 2000 & 2001

Let's be little more clear on what "LSU Standards" really are:

In 116 years of college football LSU has won 10 games or more 10 times and Les accounted for three of those.

Now he's one win short of that @ 9-4 (or even two off at 8-5) and you schumucks say he is not living up to LSU 'standards'.

He didn't 'live up' to his own standards in 2008 when he had a Freshman QB that threw more touchdowns to the bad guys than the good guys.

In 2009 he got us back to the level we were at when he took over so look for the next three years to be like his first three.

Oh, and have a great day!

Good analysis NUTS4LSU, I certainly tend to agree with you. Miles' first year as with any season had some luck in it with the last 4th down pass from Russell against ASU, and I can give Miles the losses against Tenn due to Katrina and Georgia due to the team being worn out, not an excuse but just the way it was. Miles second year, Auburn offensive game plan was strange, Florida game to this day I believe that if the Refs raise the hands on Hester's TD before Russell's fumble then different ball game. Third year, althoug exciting and obvioulsy MNC, the losses to Kentucky and Arkansas still stick in my craw. 4th year, not up to par, but bringing in new QB so understandable. Last year the Florida game, dont understand the non use of Shepard, Alabama game, Peterson on the sideline due to injury , Julio gets loose, Never will buy any excuse for the Ole Miss game, questions still abound on the PSU game. Overall, at this point, cant go up or down so I will say a push with a slight edge to down as compared to Saban's last year.
