Did we really need to show our exotic blitzes against Utah State and Vanderbilt? Those games were never in doubt. Y’all want to win every game 100-0, but the explosiveness and efficiency of our offense has allowed the defense to play pretty conservatively and still play well. Our coaches are playing the long game. Why put anything on film when you don the have to and you have 4+ more season defining games down the road? The goal is to win championships, not see how bad you can boat race Vandy or embarrass Utah State.
The defense hasn’t been suffocating like we’d like because of injuries and having to play young guys that Dave probably doesn’t fully trust yet along with the fact, as previously mentioned, it simply hasn’t had to yet. I also think the 11 o’clock starts and the sub-par opponents we’ve played has been a factor. That Saturday night Death Valley crowd against a good opponent—especially Florida—is a tangible weapon. And no unit benefits more from it than the defense. Confusion—by the offense—can mask minor mistakes by the defense. But make no mistake, If that crowd is rocking like I know it will be, we will blitz. We will most certainly blitz, my friend. And it will be glorious.
