In his prime he was one of the 4-5 most dominant centers to ever play the game. So yeah. He was a pretty good athlete.
Frick off. He's number 1-2

Was Shaq really that great of an athlete?
He was rad, bro.

Just trying to be fair
I'm just saying he's somewhere in the top 4-5. That can include 1-2.

Picture this lineup:
Shaquille O'Neal
Stanley Roberts
Harold Boudreaux
Wayne Sims
Chris Jackson
Vernel Singleton
Maurice Williamson
My Gawd in heaven....
To be fair, I don't know how Shaq made it out of college alive - he was butchered, esp. in the SEC.

IN the case of shacks's ability mmmmmmmmmmm doesn't cut it !

In those years he'd grab a rebound at least a couple times a year and take that thing full court slam.
Still the most "holy shite" feeling I've had watching a basketball game. Amazing

Didn't he get suspended against TN during the SEC tourny for a cheesy GI Joe elbow and KY, a team LSU whipped during the regular season, ended up winning it?
He got suspended for the kentucky game because he got ejected for fighting against tennesse. Cant blame him though. Sec refs were letting him get beat up the whole season. He finally fought back when he got pulled down against Tennessee.

Shaq in his prime was almost unstoppable in the post. Straight monster.

Shaq was amazing but not aggressive enough at times

Wilt Chamberlain is number 1.
Then it's between Bill Russell, Shaq, Kareem Abdul-Jabaar, and Hakeem for the rest of the top 5 (that's my order btw).

Revolutionized the Center position in the NBA. One of the original big swing men. Generational type build athletic ability combo. The relatively unathletic bigs of the NBA in the early 90s had no chance to keep up with him.
It's tough for even me in my mid-30s to remember just how incredible he was when he came out of college. Like MJ it took him a few years to win a championship and you can argue for both they hit their prime before their first title.
Most people only remember the big lumbering powerhouse from the Lakers and Heat championship years because that's when he was on TV the most.
(Wilt was about 4 feet taller than anyone he played against- NBA was nothing back then. Games weren't even recorded let alone televised. NBA only had 8 teams when he played. He was great but far from a clear number 1)

This.
People get caught up in the stats for Wilt and Russell without realizing what the league was compared to the modern league.

I think even Shaq would tell you Hakeem was the most athletic. But Shaq owns the title for dominate - at least, in modern BB.
Nah, Shaq was more athletic. Hakeem had a better touch.

Wow, never realized he was that jacked. I mean, he was pretty damn fit here at LSU.
He was a kid here. Young athletic (black) kids always look the part in college.... What you saw growing up was a grown arse man playing in the nba. Completely different dude IMO.

I don't buy the argument that Russell was the greatest Center b/c he has 11 Championship rings. Back in it's infancy, the NBA was was comprised of 8 teams. There were only 1-2 dominant "big men". It was all about the point guard.
Shaq and others (modern NBA) played in the League with 29-30 teams when the game was more physical. I agree with the above poster, that "if" Shaq could shoot FT's he would arguably be in the discussion as best Center all time. FT's were definitely his handicap
FYI - If you ask Shaq where he considers his 2nd home, he will say Cecilia. His best friend and room mate at LSU was Dane Huval. Shaq was also very close to the Boudreaux brothers. Dane's mother Ms. Evelyn "Poonie" would iron Shaq's clothes and cook for them when Dane came home. That's why Shaq sightings in Lafayette / Cecilia are still very common to this day.

My fondest memory of Shaq was when the Russian National Team with 7'3" Arvidas Sabonis came to play LSU. There was one incredible play where Shaq and Stanley Roberts had not gotten down court and LSU stole the ball and Stanley caught an outlet pass with a fast break chance with Shaq and Roberts vs. Sabonis. Roberts tossed the ball up over the rim and Shaq in effect dunked both the ball and Sabonis who had jumped up over the rim to try to block the shot. This was roughly comparable to trying to stop a freight train with a pile of whipped cream. Some sight!
