Actress Joanne Woodward (widow of actor Paul Newman) was an LSU student.

She was a "darling" of LSU or something to that effect and is pictured in one of the yearbooks in either the late '40s or early '50s. I know this because my dad was in school at the same time as she was and I have seen his yearbooks.

However, Joanne is not an LSU grad.

In 1958 (seven years before Gatorade was created on the campus of Florida), Bengal Punch was served to LSU’s team.

The story is that the guy from Florida stole the recipe from Doc Broussard then made a fortune.

Does anybody know who was the first black football player at LSU?

Hint: It was NOT Mike Williams.

LSU won the 1949 Boxing National Championship.

My junior high principal, W.O. "Pee Wee" Moss was a member of that team.

Gaynel Tinsley, before he retired, taught Business Math at Tara High School. Not sure when he retired but he was there in 1977 at least and several years after that.

The original Mike Anderson's restaurant was right outside the South Gates of LSU, in an old house, on Highland, just past East Boyd, on the right if you were heading away from campus.

Mike VI, LSU's live tiger mascot, is visited by more than 100,000 people annually.

Doesn't this happen "every" home game in the Fall?

Back in the day, before bowl games multipied and LSU was a perennial particpant, the non-bowl bound team would rent out a local watering hole, clear out anything not nailed down, lock the doors, and consume mass quantities of adult beverages. Lots of fights, throwing up, crying in their beer, and fun. ABSOLUTELY no cameras, press, coaches, or fans.

The White Horse on North Highland was a popular venue.

They called it The Perry Bowl....

It was in the old College Town Grocery before that, which is where Mike Anderson worked when he was in high school. My mom used to go buy fried fish and hush puppies from there, and they would serve you through a window in front of the store.

'Bengal Punch' created in 1958 for the Tigers predated 'Gatorade' by seven years and is thought to be the first sports drink ever created.

Les Miles' white caps are individually handcrafted in Chinese sweatshops from baby polar bear pelts.

LSU was the first college sports team to have a weight lifting program, and Istrouma High School was the first sports team period to have a weigh training program, thanks to the late Alvin Roy.
