Sid, if you like Iowa and Ferentz so much, be a fan of theirs and stop bashing LSU...Also, Ohio State dude, go back to your board and when you have something intelligent to say, bring it....still stinging from LSU national championship beat down

quote:Les is getting blasted on Atlanta sports radio today for this. They predicted a 5 loss season for us.
Les could have squeezed someone (else?) out but chose not to, probably because he didn't see this coming. Porter was the unfortunate victim.
I'm not really trying to defend this because I think it should have been handled better.

Quick question though.........how do you propose that teams deal with this attrition?
What do you mean?
Each case is different.
For going Pro, I would hope the coach makes sure the player gets as much good information that he can get to make a wise decision. I know coach Ferentz has wanted a lot of his players to go pro and a couple that he thought should come back. He wanted Shonn Greene, Dallas Clark and Bryan Bulaga to go pro but would have taken them back in a heartbeat if they wanted to stay. Just like Adrian Clayborn this year.

I was just trying to get a feel for how often this happens and if it was a big deal or not.
It's the first time this particular situation happened at LSU that most fans can remember. So a lot of fans like myself are somewhat perplexed and outraged at the grief we're getting in the form of threads like this one.
Question for the OP: Did you ever make a post like this on an Alabama forum? If not, why did you break your cherry on this subject here?

What I mean is that attrition does happen but it is not always apparent prior to national signing day. Often academics, legal or medical issues cause loss of players that may have been unforseen. Also, VERY often signees do not qualify academically.
In the major college football, coaches combat this phenomenon by "over-signing". Sometimes that does not go as planned.
The alternative would be to play with less than 85 scholarship athletes, but that will not happen unless the NCAA steps in and mandates a change across the board. Les Miles does a better job of managing this than several other SEC coaches (I do not follow many outside the SEC), IMHO.

Miles did exactly what he should have done.

Never knew any team did this until I saw it posted on a Hawkeye Message board that LSU did it and that is why I wanted to get LSU's fan base perspective.

So you don't think Iowa could sign 30 players if they wanted to? Maybe they just choose to do things with a higher moral code than some other schools or maybe they know that most of the players they recruit will qualify. Frankly, I think it is wrong for any University to oversign in the hopes of some not qualifying and should be outlawed.
Did you start the website www.oversign.com? Just curious.

The only thing I have a problem with is.....APPARENTLY...E. Porter was not prepared ahead of time for the posibility of the greyshirt. It should not have been a shock to him in the week before practice began, and apparently it was.
I am assuming that based on the available information. Neither you nor I have perfect info.
Am I torn up by it? No. Just a little dissapointed.
On the other hand.......1)all our signees qualified, 2) coach chose to greyshirt a highly regarded athlete.........things could be worse.

I think Coach Ferentz tries to recruit to 85 every year, then if there is some unforseen attrition will award a deserving scholarship to a walkon or save it for another year.

Right or wrong, this strategy would not produce a winning team in the SEC. If the NCAA did step in to eliminate over-signing, it would cut down on some of the oportunities given to the poorest and most uneducated (lowest test scores). I guess they could go the JUCO route untill the grades/tests were in order.

How do you know he was not warned about this beforehand? Do you think he had no idea how many recruits were signed in this class? I bet he did, so I can bet you he knew this was an option.

Apparently.....perfect knowledge.....blah, blah
I tried to head this off, but it didn't work.
Maybe he was told about it before NSD, maybe he was reminded when Gore qualified and maybe he was re-reminded when Wing qualified. Maybe all this happened and he still said what he did.
Maybe, but I doubt it.
Again, neither you nor I have perfect knowledge. This is just my reading of the tea leaves.
I'm not crucifying anyone, I wish it would have been handled better, by someone. The most probable person to do that would be Miles

Oh I know, I am just saying it should have been pretty obvious that it was a possibility.

The only way to handle it differently would be to only sign the limit, but then you run the risk of having classes like Iowa where you end up with less than the limit. And then could you imagine the shite that would then be said about Les?
I guess you are damned if you do damned if you don't. People are still going to say Les messed up.

You would think word would get out and that recruits would stay away from coaches and schools that do this for fear of the risk of being cut. I hope that Iowa uses this in recruiting against schools that do and can show the recruit that he may get cut if that school over signs players and that at Iowa he is guaranteed a scholarship if he qualifies.
