I've said here for years in many threads over what ails LSU Hoops..
Lack of fan support, be it students and/or non-student, is the #1 reason why LSU currently cannot recruit elite Parade-AA talent, unless the players are La natives.
Elite players don't want to play in empty arenas lacking enthusiasm. They don't want to play in empty road game arenas like Auburn, UGA,etc..
Let alone major power programs, or major conference schools up north, just watch the crowds and enthusiasm of the filled arenas(albeit some of marginal size) at even schools like Southern Illinois, Mizzou State, Dayton, Iowa State, Sienna, St Mary's, Gonzaga, NM, ATM, Butler,etc..
Kentucky is the only SEC school that treats hoops as religion. Not even Fla with it's two recent titles and decade-plus of Kruger-Donovan excellence, gives their program the full respect and fandom it's recent results deserve. Tenn rarely selling out TB. SC fans loyal for mediocrity. Vandy fills the lil old gym for solid program. Ark fans haven't had their expected vintage product, thus haven't had many sellouts in ages..and most of the West schools treat hoops as a time killer until spring football and/or baseball gets in league play.
It's totally heartbreaking for LSU Hoops fans that were there to see the program and fanbase from the late 1970s to early 1990s. LSU was a consistent top ten to fifteen national program over that period. Dale Brown recruited nationally and internationally, and had the PMAC rocking and/or filled with great teams, and/or rare talents that brought out the curious and bandwagoners to see the spectacle.

This subject has been hashed over a hundred times. The kids these days quit playing basketball as soon as the black kid in gym class slammed his two handed set shot back in his face. These kids don't know the game don't respect the game and don't support anything that doesn't include bean bag games stupid drinking games and sloppy social behavior. Trent will have to appeal to the grownups to get more than 6-8k in the PMAC on a erg basis. This grownups enjoys the games and looks forward to a bright future.

Nah, people here just don't give a shite about basketball.
But they did not that long ago. I've been in the PMAC dozens of times that were sell-outs. It is different now but "Deaf Dome" was once more than just a memory. A steady dose of exciting play, especially with a couple of Louisiana guys, could change things in a hurry. One special player can bring a 180 to the crowds.

Dale Brown was the man! LSU hoops has been in trouble ever since. Brady recruited some decent talent, and if he would have been allowed to stay, he wouldnt have sucked so much last year and this year.

I'm not a Brady fan, way too much dow-jonesing even beyond his early inherited mess. In my opinion, he taught rebounding, and shotclock halfcourt defense, as strengths.
But, his grad rates, marginal transition defense, questionable FT % teams, queer halfcourt sets of lazy lob pass & skip pass offense, and the inability to break a press by March most any year..was downright ignorant.
Let alone, his farming out recruitment, treatment of many players, his player's reviews of him, and his offcourt chardonnay room/marital issues, that were a turnoff to many folks.
TJ's coaching up of his initial '08-'09 squad, of only 7 deep, to an outright SEC title(Brady's two were split crowns..and with bigger, stronger, & deeper teams), and giving eventual champ and preseason #1 UNC it's toughest tourney game, outshined anything Brady did in his entire tenure, imho.

It is only my opinion. I believe Brady had developed a recruiting identity and brought in HIS type of talent. He wasnt the greatest, but he gave us some competitive seasons. The only good season Trent had was with "Brady" talent.
Posted on 1/16/11 at 4:35 pm to aroussel3Tigers
there hasn't been much talent in La really since Johnson has been here. Trent has gotten everyone he has wanted.

Basketball is an east coast game, and is only popular at schools who can't compete at football, here is the current top 10: Duke, Ohio State, Kansas, Syracuse, Pittsburgh, San Diego State, Villanova, Purdue, Notre Dame, and Connecticut. Besides OSU, notice a trend? We don't really "play" basketball in the south, our best athletes play football, thats why the SEC is the best conference.
I don't understand why you all are so upset, the team sucks, its not entertaining to watch, we don't care so why would should the students have to go?
Lets look at it this way: LSU Track and Field is always amazing but who goes wants to watch a long boring arse track meet? You go to a sporting event to be entertained, it really doesn't matter if the team is good or not, as long as you enjoy going, if the team had a star player that people enjoyed watching, the place would be packed. Its not fair to call out the students and cry that they don't go see a shitty product on the court. Stay home and read, play video games, STUDY: it is college afterall, they don't pay tutition to go to sporting events, and they should not be forced to support a shitty team just because they go to LSU.

I'm pretty sure half of those schools care about football too. Lack of football success does not = basketball success. I'm not arguing for or against the student support, espically if the rest of LSU fans aren't willing to show up at the PMAC either. But the argument of football schools can't be basketball schools is ridiculous.
And Villinova is a pretty good I-AA football team.
