If anything, these lists may show what some schools are doing poorly - Mich has the 7th largest endowment, but isn't ranked in the top 25. However, endowments are absolute entities, and most ranking factors are normalized, so large schools don't gain as much.

Your are right. They are at 29 right behind UVA, Wake Forest and Tufts. 25 to 29 is a HUGE difference though.

I bet if you took the largest endowments and divided them by the number of students within the institution or system (as in the case of aTm and UT), you probably end up with pretty much the exact same U.S. News rankings.

I agree - i said as much in my normalized vs. absolute factors comment, but you said it more succinctly.

but Harvard has had its reputation way before endowment awareness was prevalent.

I'm not sure this is true. We can slice & dice the endowment question to death, but at the end of the day LSU will NEVER see an increase in its status without a larger endowment. Why should we when other schools have endowments >$1 billion? COMPETITIVE ENDOWMENT STATUS IS THE FOUNDATION FOR A UNIVERSITY TO BE GREAT. Yes, other things can be done too, but LSU NEEDS to increase its endowment because so many things would take care of themselves.

I wonder how many of the so called "top" schools have endowments less than $1 billion? I'll bet none do.

Nobody claimed the SEC was an academic conference. It is a football conference. Who the hell let Vandy in?? They blow the curve on both counts.

Graduation rate is the most terrible thing when determining how good a school is. It insinuates that students need only to pay for their scholarships and not learn anything for the school to be doing its job.

Also, FWIW, the US News and World Reports ranking is highly dubious.

Thank you, Spirit, for posting that. If you hadn't, I would have. The US News and World Report rankings are more of a popularity contest and often grad assistants fill out the information to rank the universities.

The Carnegie classifications list LSU as an RU/VH - Research Universities very high research activity.
Alabama is listed as an RU/H Research University high research activity.

Arguing about which SEC school has better academics is like arguing wabout which of the Golden Girls was hottest.

LSU is more difficult to get in to than buttfrickabama....FACT.

Even if that were not the case, anybody who is a sane and rational American would realize that LSU is in every way superior to alabama..... It is just the way, the truth and the light.... I look down on a Bama grad (and bama fans), and rightfully so, because they are inferior beings.....inside every little gump frick bama grad, is an LSU grad dying to get out of the trapped pathetic soul that made them settle for something inferior like bama! Can you not see this?

P.S.....

P.P.S....but seriously...I would NOT EVER trade my LSU degree for a fricking gump degree, any day of the week.

This is the lamest bunch of BS I've ever seen trying to justify 124 is equal to 79.

We all know that LSU needs to clean up it's act and has for decades. The LA free mentality needs to stop. Raising the tuition to $8k per year would be a good start.

I've heard that 25% of LSU graduates move to the Houston/Dallas areas.

I might rather be homeless. I could have made a lot more money in Houston, but I'd live in Houston.

No one is arguing that LSU doesn't need to improve, but to no one who is well-informed takes USNR seriously in its attempt to rank schools. To think there is a significant difference between an education received at LSU and an education received at Alabama is not very sound thinking.

"Also, having an large endowment takes extreme fiscal restraint NOT to spend it in tough times... I can't see our state legislature doing that"

This is the best part of the endowment. The state cannot touch it and can't even count it as part of its budgeting. All of the money has been designated by the donor what it is going to do. Whether that is scholarships, buildings or whatever, all of that has been predetermined by the donor in perpetuity. The state has no control whatsoever over what happens to the money in the endowment.
