I really don't know. Im not familiar with how much money the potential DCs would want or how much they were looking for last year. According to the Advocate, Pendergast contacted LSU last year. Also the 49ers kinda look like a dumpster fire right now.
I have heard Steele was getting about $1 million a year at LSU. My dream scenario is for Pendergast to get hired for about this price and Coach O to keep crootin. From what I understand they get along from their time at USC. Judging from his resume, Pendergast looks like he prefers Coordinator and position coaching over a college HC job.
Like you said, LSU does not want to spend money and they showed this in the case for Fisher (at least from a PR standpoint). Hate to say it but Frank Wilson will leave us at some point for a HC gig. I don't want Raymond as DC because of all the blown coverages earlier in the year. Let Clancy handle the X's and O's and groom Bebe for the next 2-4 years for HC when Miles leaves. It would be the big time HC job he has been looking for in his home State and probably would not break the bank for LSU.
But i think the most likely scenario is Coach O is promoted to DC.

You realize he's had two stints as a head coach? I'm pretty confident he can handle the DC duties.

Really??? $$$$ says otherwise....

The more I read about Aranda, the more I like this idea.

In that case, let's make a comparison:
Les: OLine coach, great recruiter, successful head coach. Would you want him as an OC?
Coach O: Dline coach, great recruiter, unsuccessful head coach. Why does everyone just assume he can be a play calling DC.
Ed is fantastic at what he does. Try for a known commodity. If the issues with Miles' status or lack of hiring your own staff causes issues, O is still in the back pocket.

USC has been talking to coach O about returning. He passed on the offer.

wasn't he the one signaling in steeles calls to the field?

And Brick signaled in chief's calls. So what? O wasn't the one making the calls on the fly; he was just parroting in what Steele called. He's never been responsible for down to down play calling. This in no different that asking an OLine coach to jump into play calling with zero experience at it. It doesn't make sense.

A known commodity like Steele? No thanks

Steele was a known commodity: a steaming pile of shite. Would you like to add something to the O debate or just make some more shitty, and obvious, observations?

Ron Zook would be my 1st choice. Say what you want about him as a head coach but the man would give us a badass defense, a great special teams unit, and his recruiting ability rivals orgerons. Those two together with Raymond and Wilson would have to be the best recruiting staff in rhe country.

That defense was so overrated. Those stats and ranking were built on a shitty Wisconsin offense, Sam Houston State, New Mexico State, ULM. It got rolled by Mississippi state, Auburn, Arkansas. Gave up big plays to Alabama to come back, had a good game against Ole Miss. But rankings and stats were a product of stuffing no name teams mostly.
