I am not convinced that he was the best LSU QB ever......

his only competition is jones and tittle

and you can't really compare

but i'll go with russell's amazing ypa with his very high completion rate. you just don't see both that high very often

what is another measure to compare 1 player to another other than how they performed on the field?

my point is you can't.......different times, different types of players, etc.....just like I stated in my previous post.....so just to say that JR is the best LSU QB ever is ridiculous.....IMO, you can't make that assumption

I was under the assumption that the discussion was a head-to-head comparison with Flynn. That's what I have read on here more than anything else.

Tommy Hodson, a 1990 graduate of LSU, was one of the most prolific quarterbacks in SEC history, setting virtually every LSU passing record and numerous SEC marks from 1986-89. Hodson, a four-time All-SEC signal-caller, led LSU to three bowl games, including the 1987 Sugar Bowl after taking LSU to the 1986 SEC title with a 9-2 record. He also led LSU to a 10-1-1 mark in 1987, and a tie for the SEC championship in 1988

quote:

As quarterback for LSU's football team, Hodson led LSU to two SEC Championships, first as a freshman (1986) and then as a junior (1988). During his 44 regular season games at LSU (1986-1989), Hodson passed for 9,115 yards and 69 touchdowns, becoming the first quarterback in SEC history to surpass 8,000 career passing yards, and the first quarterback in SEC history to surpass 60 career passing touchdowns. Hodson passed for over 2,000 yards during each of his four seasons at LSU, becoming the 3rd player in NCAA history to achieve that feat. During his freshman season, Hodson was voted to the first team All-SEC Team, becoming the first LSU quarterback to awarded that honor since the legendary Bert Jones (first team All-SEC Team, 1972). Hodson would go on to be selected to the first team of the All-SEC Team during each of his four seasons at LSU, becoming the only player in LSU history to achieve that feat.

quote:

In 2004, Jamarcus Russell, split time with senior quarterback Marcus Randall, playing in 11 games and starting 4. He completed just over 50 percent of his passes for 1,053 yards, throwing for 9 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.

quote:

In 2005, he also improved statistically, completing 60 percent of his passes for 2,443 yards and 15 touchdowns. Russell received an honorable mention on the AP's All-SEC Team.

quote:

He had a productive 2006 regular season, leading the Tigers to a 10-2 record and a BCS Sugar Bowl berth. He threw for 2,797 yards, 26 touchdowns and 7 interceptions. He was also second in the SEC with 2,923 yards from scrimmage. At the end of the 2006 season, Russell was named to the all-SEC first team, ahead of Kentucky's Andre Woodson and Florida's Chris Leak. In addition, he was named an honorable mention All-American by Sports Illustrated.

Two thoughts, Tommy Hodson had the best career as an LSU QB ever! I thought I've read on here constantly where Jamarcus was the best QB in 2006. He only received honorable mention all-american by one publication. Being the #1 pick predicts pro success, not college success.

Troy Smith, Brady Quinn, and Colt Brennan were the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd team All-American QB's for the AP. Smith, Quinn, and Chad Henne for Rivals.com. Smith and Quinn were 1st and 2nd team for Sports Illustrated, and Jamarcus was listed with 6 others for Honorable Mention.

and out of all those qb's, who was better than him.

Brady Quinn and Brennan are laughable, Troy Smith's #'s were a result of their schedule, and he still didn't play as well as Russell

Only 1 other team in history has played 4 top 10 teams on the road (LSU played 4 top 8)

maybe you should look at at their stats, you know actual performance measurements, instead of media voting

I really wonder why some LSU fans are so anti-Russell. They're always so quick to tear him down.

Quinn posted rather impressive numbers, finishing the season with 3,426 yards on 289 completions out of 467 attempts for a completion percentage of 61.9% and 7.34 yards-per-attempt. He threw 37 touchdowns to only 7 interceptions, and was sacked 31 times.

quote:

Colt Brennan threw for 5,549 yards, 58 touchdowns, and the highest passer efficiency in America. He led the nation in scoring and passing efficiency, finishing the regular season with a 182.8 rating, and completed 72.15% of his passes, the best mark in Division I-A.

quote:

Smith's passing statistics improved during the 2006 season, completing 67% of his passes for 2,507 yards, with 30 touchdowns and five interceptions. This led to a quarterback rating of 167.87, again fourth in the country.

quote:

During his junior season in 2006, Henne completed 203 of 328 passes for 2,508 yards, 22 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions

quote:

Jamarcus Russell completed 232 of 342 for 2,797 yards, 26 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.

This is several QB's in a variety of different systems. (Here comes the Jimbo Fisher blame). How can you say that JR's year was better than all of these guys?

the only one more impressive statistically is brennan and you have to factor in the horrible, horrible schedule that he played against
