don't think we will have a menace in the sense of Nick Fairley blowing up the middle every play, however, i do think our DT's are talented enough to negate a lot of rushing up the middle, forcing your backs to the outside, which is what Chavis' gameplan ias hoping for, because we will often be blitzing our nickel back (Tyrann Mathiau) and our linebackers (Karnell Hatcher, a converted safety). Our ends are super speedy, an should do a decent job of containing rushes around the edge of the lines, so I would expect those players listed to have a lot of tackles near the line of scrimmage after runners get bounced to the outside.
If LMJ, Barner, Huff and Seastrunk are allowed to get to the edge to go against T Rex or Hatcher, they will win some battles. A poster on here said he was going to do an exposé on the scheme against LSU vs. Auburn and how Chavis had someone in position to tackle. The problem I see is that you need two or three tacklers (unless you're blowing up the line because three will get there). You have to pick your poison. LSU should probably use a cover zero like Cal to have 2 or three tacklers covering the edges.

ain I still think LSU wins in the end, but I think it’ll be damn close.

quote:I feel those two will be coming in for tackles behind the line of scrimmage, there will still be safety support to stop the run as usual, plus the other linebackers roaming around, I just wanted to let you know the names I think you will be hearing the most, since that appeared to be what you were asking. There is no doubt your backs will get a few long runs, the real question will be how many, and how easily. IMO, that will be the key to the game.

I am saying have no safety help at all.

I think we should brainstorm and figure this all out... then send our recommendations over to the coaching staff. After watching games on television and a few in person, I think most of us are adequately prepared to create a gameplan.
As long as we, the fans, don't overlook the opponent. If we, the fans, keep our heads in the game and don't look ahead, then we should be fine on the field... IF, the coaching staff heeds our advice.

I will level with you bisonduck. You're right, we don't have a major disruptor on the d-line at this point. The only thing we can guarantee is that we have depth. We try to speculate that Johnson, Mingo and Montgomery will be our major contributors, but there is not a lot to go off of since they are all young players.
As of now, the strength of our defense is our corners and safeties. With your team losing some WRs, this could be a factor in how quickly your team moves the ball down the field. When it comes to our line and linebackers, we don't have a lot of proven talent, so your run game will be be your best option of moving the ball down the field, especially early in the game.
I've watched a few Oregon games and your team is one of the few teams in the country which has the athletes to play away from an opposing team's defensive strength while attacking their weakness from many different angles. The only games where you guys struggled in that regard were Cal and Auburn. Though I blame more of that on your offense just being off and some poor decisions by a young QB.
I expect Oregon to come out firing against us and even get an early lead in the first half. Like most games, the 2nd half will determine this one and that's where LSU's depth will play a roll in keeping the game close. Keep in mind that this is a match up of not only two ranked teams, but two top 5 teams. We represent two of the best teams in the country and hopefully we give the fans a good show.

Good post. However, one critique: I think in your effort to be objective, you sell our defensive line short. To be sure, it's a question of degree but I see Brockers becoming a monster here. Afterall, Drake steadily improved each season. He was not nearly as dominant in 2009 or 08 as he was in 2010. Brockers is bigger, stronger and steadily improving. He was our second best tackle last season and he is ready to make the next step. As for Freak, to be clear, he'll only have a minor role v UO. He'll be the 4th or 5th tackle off the bench. Maybe get a dozen snaps. He's mentioned in the context of the quality of our depth. We have a very good line without him.
Yea sometimes I find myself having to be almost overly critical to balance out all the purple and gold koolaide on here haha!
As for Brockers, trust me no one has higher hopes for him than I do. He was one of my favorite recruits in his class; the guy literally has the body of Hercules. And yea Nevis improved each year, but you still saw flashes of what could be. I think the problem with Brockers is he doesn’t have the strong hands you need in a DT. I had a friend meet Suh at the Heisman ceremony, and he said the guy almost crushed his hands (my friend is a 6’-4” ~250+ former college DE).
I don’t think many people realize how much DL play is about hands and leverage. Brockers is at a disadvantage when it comes to leverage because of his height so he has to make it up elsewhere. He’s got the strength everywhere else, and that’s why he doesn’t get moved and why he will be productive regardless. However, I don’t know if he has the hand strength and ability to disengage and shed the blocker to become that elite DT.
Agree with Freak against Oregon. If he makes a major impact in game one as a freshmen against an offense like that which is designed to confuse and use reckless penetration against a player than we need to start his Heisman campaign that following day! And to your point about having very good depth without him, do we really? We have crazy depth at DE, but we really don’t have that much depth at DT with Davenport moving. Again, I’m not trying to denigrate these guys. I think we’ll have a very good DL next year. However I don’t think we have the depth across the board that we’ve had in years past. At DE? Yea. At DT? Not so much.

It will be a good game. I am impressed by LSU fans much more than Auburn. The latter was just ingorant.
Anyway, DT will have to be on his game to unlock your D. Here's to hoping he got over the big game jitters in the NCG.

There are dipshits that post on the rant. But for most we would apreciate some sort of explanation. Instead of posting bullshite.
Lsu could lose this game, but it wont be because of no depth on dline or because the fricking roof is open. Come on man, you may very well be one of those dipshits you were talking about.

quote:agreed, I can easily see it going either way. I am clinging on to the hope that natural form stays true, and defenses are light years ahead of offenses at this point in the season. I like our chances better in a grinder.
It will be a good game.

AU fans are just ignorant as a whole. Didn't help that last year they had the "our shite don't stink" attitude during the cam debacle

Oregon Fan thoughts on the game
I've only seen a couple.....Look, I understand that bias will cloud judgement here and there, but good grief. This one was worth posting here. Sure, it was just 1 guy, but sheesh. It's early too. I'm sure there will be alot more going on closer to game time.
In comparison to Boise St.
quote:
Second, LSU's defense is big, but much slower than BSU's. Their D line won't last very long having to chase Oregon's RB's sideline to sideline all day. From what I've seen from LSU, they're not super deep on the D-Line, so putting in a quality player to give the starters a breather will be tough for them. When LSU has to dedicate more players to stop the run game, the passing game will open up with a much better QB than Masoli ever was, who can stretch the field (Albeit with unproven receivers).
quote:
I think Oregon's speed (both the team's speed, and the speed of the game) will hit LSU hard in the late 3rd quarter. The roof will most likely be open at Cowboys stadium, so the heat and humidity will be a factor. I don't see it bothering Oregon as much as some people may think. Oregon handled it just fine when they went to Tennessee last year.
As a Duck, I'm curious where you're getting these quotes. Sounds like junior high to me.

I don't think we're better than we were last year, but I also think 95%+ of the country would trade their DT depth with ours.
agree
only difference is O-line being a little more experienced really.
Think well be a little better on offense, conservative but a couple more shots downfield....I hope anyway.

I will say this though about BSU. I don't think we saw a better DT tandem in Billy Wynn and Chase Baker - Oakie names for sure. In the past two years, they stick out in my mind more than any other tandem. Fairley was the best but as a tandem, they were. Their ends are very athletic. SEC fans can't stand BSU (nor can Oregon fans) but they did have quite the two year run beating Oregon, TCU, VaTech (in essentially an away game).
