I used to work in the artificial turf and lighting industry. The playing surface is FieldTurf. They are the laughing stock of the industry. They do the Saints, Cowboys, Falcons etc. Awful fields and have been for a while. Bellichick hates those people because their fields have injured alot of his players over the years.
Ironturf is where the industry is heading. They closer stitching than fieldturf's bullshite fields. Fieldturf fields green blades are so spread out that sand and rubber pellets kick up with every step and provide an unstable playing surface.

The superdome uses Act Global Synthetic Turf since 2017. The Pats and Falcons still use Fieldturf.

This is true. The roof opens up like a porn star's glory hole to allow the sun's rays go to work.

That's very normal. The pellets allow the artificial grass to feel more natural when players cut on it. It makes it easier on the joints.

On artificial turf fields, the rubber infill mixed with sand is held in place by the green "turf" we see. The rubber and sand is the playing surface. The "turf" is for aesthetics. The rubber infill and sand does compact over time and has to be "fluffed up". All turf fields are provided with the necessary equipment to maintain the fields. IMHO, someone got lazy and instead of grooming or "fluffing up" the field, simply added more rubber infill which caused the horrible playing conditions. As i recall, the infill/sand combination should be about 1-1/2" deep and no more.
Just BAD field management on the part of the Atlanta Dome. Piss poor is more like it.
