negative message boards contributed to the decommit
There's no telling what contributes to each individual player's decisions. It's entirely possible that negativity, whether on message boards, in newspapers, around water coolers, on school playgrounds or wherever else, might impact the decisions of some. That is simply the way life is. It's not just limited to college football.
The simple reality is that negativity generally does surround any enterprise that isn't working well. Negativity about a poorly performing company makes its stock price go down, which makes it harder for the company to perform better. Negativity about a failing government erodes support for it, which makes it harder for it to succeed.
But the bottom line is that if the company or the football program or the government or any other enterprise is being managed poorly, just being positive isn't likely to be enough to make it succeed anyway. This is why our football program took a plunge in 2008 despite the overwhelmingly positive atmosphere surrounding it in the aftermath of the 2007 national championship. We could all sit here and cheerlead for Miles until the cows come home like we did after 2007, but if his schemes, strategies and decisions aren't good, they won't work, no matter how much support he gets.
In that situation, whether you're talking about a football coach or an elected official or the CEO of a company, negativity is helpful because it either A) lets him know he needs to do things differently, or B) lets those with the power to remove him know that he needs to be removed. A football coach is in some ways like an elected official, with fans "voting" by buying tickets and merchandise, attending games and voicing their feelings. He can be "voted" out if he doesn't satisfy the fans, just like an elected official who doesn't satisfy the voters or a CEO who doesn't satisfy his stockholders.
Bad management produces bad results, and bad results produce negative perceptions. There's no way around that, and censoring a message board (or posters censoring themselves) won't change this fundamental fact of life. The solution for any coach, CEO or elected official who doesn't think he's getting enough support is very simple: PERFORM BETTER.

The prospects should be seeing something less negative than they are seeing now. You negative numbskulls are feeding the opposition and this crap can be out there for some time. We are not talking about just next year, we are talking about you damaging the school recruiting for the next 4-5 years. I know you negatives won't get on the rant in a year or two and say "we have such a great program and coaching staff". You are the kind of people who are nver satisfied with anything and even if we had won the National Championship you would be bitching.
