All I'm saying is this girl has a trusted source so its not lible until its proven untrue. Won't all of you feel stupid if it is true?

Because the director of student media got pissed they published an article with a single unnamed source.
It isn't good practice. That doesn't mean that
A) it is necessarily false
B) it doesn't happen all the time (hint: it does happen all the time, especially in political reporting)

If this info is false, though....the Reveille could be subject to defamation suits from both McCarthy and Hicks.
They better fricking hope it is true.

ok, it's still speaks to me of how weak her source was on all this. how does a former player who was around three yrs ago know the inner workings of the recruitment of a JUCO kid from CA? That's a rhetorical question and a big reason I think this chick is pulling shite out her arse w/ this source.

Listen I can guarantee you with about 90 percent assurance that this story is accurate. I worked at The Reveille for 4 years during college as a writer, sports editor and managing editor. While I'm not familiar with this particular instance, I don't think the editor of the paper would print this on the top of the front page unless the unnamed source provided substantial evidence to back up their claim. It's not all going to be printed, but trust me it's there.
As for the reason the story got pulled from the web site, this happened a few times while I worked for the paper and it's always a case of the administration (Student Media and/or Athletic Department) bullying a bunch of students because something got out before their PR departments could spin it the way they wanted. It's just the nature of student media and faculty relations.

They won't get sued and if they do they don't have much to worry about -- the plaintiff would have to prove actual malice - or published with knowing falsity or reckless disregard for the truth... it's a pretty high burden to jump over (especially for a student paper).
And the Director of Student Media doesn't control content, the Editor does!
They probably just decided it wasn't the best move to have a one-source anonymous story.

IF TRUE How much trouble would LSU be in?

True. I agree. It was not a good decision by the writer or the editor to write and run this story. They should have awaited confirmation from a second source if they won't name the first one.
My thinking is that the kids down there (most of whom I know) are eager to be the "inside source" on this one. It is happening right under their noses and they want to be the first to know...LSU is their beat. They want to outreport The Advocate and the TV stations.
Unfortunately, it seems they let this eagerness get the better of their judgment.

can someone put a call into Colorado Robertson and see what he has to say about this?

True. But one could argue this was reckless disregard.

True, but the director can tell him to pull a story like this.

Agreed. They shouldn't have published it in the first place. Bad move.

Good to know the Reveille checks their sources to be legit.
Some doozies in there are the claim that this only became known AFTER the Arky game is laughable. Really, this writing has to be the worst I've ever seen as far as credibility, integrity, and quality.
This girl needs to go learn to be a checker or greeter at Wal-Mart because she in NO WAY ever deserves a job in media.

the real tragedy is that the Frank Wickes story isn't the lead story.

Kinda cool that this both of our last years with the program.

Worked there in Sports in college, great place. Reckless disregard is for all intents and purposes near impossible to prove in a case like this one. If she had a source that said it that's not reckless disregard, especially if its a former football player. Not a stretch to want to believe a former football player. Then again, not a stretch to ask if this former football player has an ax to grind.
My belief is that they probably got the quote, the source read the quotes and got pissed off, and combined with the one-source anonymous story being a generally bad idea, they pulled it.

really the people who are fricking retarded in this thread are the ones who keep saying "liberals" and shite like that. I'm not even a liberal but its just retarded. Should be more like "students" than "liberals"

she could very well be conservative (many students at LSU are).
Conservatives are usually how should I say..."conservative". That means they are cautious in how they proceed with things ie. investigations. Liberals tend to have an "anything goes" attitude which means "oh here's a source let's get it out there and breatk the story first!" You don't usually see "conservative media" You usually see the media referanced as "liberal" media. That's all. Not calling her a liberal just the uncalculated action of a journalist.
Perhaps I should have posted "Liberalism
How's that?
