Do you disagree with this ranking for SEC basketball programs? Not just this year, but for the last 5 or 10 years? 15 years? I think it's REALLY close to accurate. Remove LSU from the discussion from a second.
Kentucky
Florida
MSU
Tennessee
Alabama
Arkansas
Vanderbilt
Ole Miss
Georgia
South Carolina
Auburn
Depending on how long you want to measure I'd flip UT and MSU would definitely flip Vandy and Arkansas.

not saying davis is coach k but his first 3 yrs at duke he was 38-47 and 13-29 in conference play. I wonder if they are happy they didn't fire him.

quote:Going back 10 years as you suggest, I would have Florida (2 NC in the past 6 years) over Kentucky (1 Final Four in that time frame) and Vandy (5 NCAA and 2 Sweet Sixteen in last 8 years) over Bama (1 Elite Eight back in 2004, 1 NIT final, but hasn't made NCAA tournament since 2006). Conference record isn't a bad starting point, but then you may have to rearrange a little bit based on championships, postseason play and other factors.

Also have to consider that the conference schedules aren't equal, so conference records can't be compared in a vacuum: Vandy has had to play Florida, Kentucky and Tennessee twice every year, while Bama and State have not.

I generally agree with what your saying.
I appreciate the replies from you (and others). Ultimately, I was drowned out by the idiocy of the rant (that's on me, for trying to establish a credible argument) and have given up on trying to make a point.
Ultimately, I think that conference record (especially as you increase the time span) is a really strong indicator of the overall "goodness" of an NCAA program, because it measures similar teams against similar competition.
If I get a couple slow days here at work, I'll see if my idea carries over to a couple of other conferences, and how people perceive the strong (and weak) programs elsewhere.
As far as how it relates to how bad of a program LSU has been, and how we're much closer to a Baylor program (5-10 year rebuild) then we are a Kentucky program (three player rebuild)..... forget it.
It's not worth the effort of screaming into the wind tunnel.
