I have a very very very good source that says Crowton kept shep out bc he wasnt "ready"
-------------------------------------------------
Did you actually need a 'source' to figure this out?
Rantards always think freshman can just waltz in and dominate the SEC.

Are you telling me that snapping the ball to a 170 lb guy, and running him directly up the middle against SEC defenses is using him correctly?
Crowton gets paid a few hundred thousand dollars a year to come up with this stuff too by the way.

Well since I watched Shep run the offense in the Spring Game, if someone could pull up his stats. I totally disagree with the notion that he couldn't run an offense. He did it quite well including passing the ball.

hist first play was like a 7 yard slant, where was that this season

If he wasn't ready, why wasn't he redshirted? Sure he had some good plays this year but nothing was really game changing. Now he has an entire year of playing time gone. Poor management by the offensive staff once again.

The kid looked as lost as any player
I am wondering who's responsibility it is to make sure he is ready?

Yea everytime he touched the ball, he was good for 8+ yards. Really looked clueless.
This!

My take (pure guesswork really):
1- Maybe they had to promise to give him "a chance" at QB and "a chance" to play as a frosh to get his signature.
2 - Maybe giving him snaps and having him learn the playbook from the QB position inhibited him from learning the RB/Slot/WR positions as well as he could have if he had concentrated on one or two of those.
3 - Maybe they'll have him concentrate on one of those positions now.
4 - Maybe I just made all this stuff up.

I think there is more to this than most realize. Everyone assumed he is such a good athlete that he would adapt to any and all positions right away, but that's not an automatic at SEC level competition (even if he looked good in the Spring game). I remember when Doucet came out of high school as the #1 rated athlete. It took him a year to adjust to the WR position. Not to take blame away from Crowton for not making adjustments and finding ways to use him, but it does suggest that he could make a lot of progress between his frosh and soph year.

Then someone needs to coach his arse bc he is too good of an athlete not to play
I agree! Why do some people insist that Shep couldn't comprehend the game plan? The guy came into the program earlier than all other freshman, and seems pretty intelligent. High School teams run triple options ALL THE TIME. Why would Shep not be able to pick up plays and learn a few good plays every week and build on it throughout the season? G
One thing that LSU needed last season was a spark in the offense, and the coaches had it sitting on the bench, or brought him in and ran the same 2 plays all year. Hell, the best play of Shep’s season was an I formation hand off off-tackle that he took to the house against Auburn, and I don't remember Crouton ever going back to that play again.
Bottom line is this team underachieved in 2009, and Shep was a small part of that picture. The offensive play calling was not designed around the type of players that were on this team, the players were asked to conform to Crouton’s game plan.

Then why in the heck did they let the kid burn his redshirt?
This is just full of fail..(not the OP, but the whole thing in general)
How hard is it to learn to line up and get the hand off? How could he not be ready for that?
I hope to goodness this is incorrect information.
If a kid can't come in the spring and be ready by Florida!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Then it's coaching...scheme, whatever, it ain't the kid....
Go look at Sheps HS highlight film....It's football, not rocket science...
I am sure he wasn't ready to start at QB, but he could run certain plays...from day one...this is just stupid....

Is one pass too much to ask for?
Posted on 1/27/10 at 9:54 pm to RelientAA
in the jets colts game when the jets running qb pulled up and hit the bomb---every single person I know said - why did we not do that with shepard-- poor kid went to spring school early for just one great run against auburn and rode pine most of the time--that is what hurts with recruits-- miles only plays srs especially on o line

are you saying 8+ yards per carry wasn't good enough? i'm wondering if any of you cared to watch any of his high school film. he ran circles around high school defenses, up the middle, off tackle, options, whatever. he threw to open receivers who ran simple routes. he was a high school coaches dream = direct snap and run for the td is an easy playcall (throw in a pass play every once in a while to keep them on there toes). the college game is a little more complex. and yes i think he was underutilized. but i do think you are giving him (and the recruiting services to a lesser extent) waaaay too much credit. he is a great athlete, and will make his mark at lsu. just let him learn the game first.

Yeah, no kidding. I would have liked to see him get more PT...but I was also worried every time he did touch the ball that he'd get body slammed again and cough up the ball. I'll be glad to see him next season with some extra weight.

While this has been sort of beaten to death, this is yet another example of a disconnect between Miles and Crowton. How does Crowton still have a job?
