I don't want to see fire and brimstone on the sidelines. I want thoughtful, reasoned, intelligent decisions on defensive formations and expectations - and I want on-field adjustments to the the offensive tendencies according to the talent we have.

I agree we don't want Chavis looking like that nut from Washington running up and down the sideline screaming at the players. However, even Micky Andrews, who has to be over 70, has some fire and energy on the sidlines. Chavis looked sleepy.

I think it is way too early to really know a lot....
I still have concerns regarding his basic philosophy of "playing soft", you may want to call it read-react..whatever name is used gives me concern. In the SEC, a half of a second delay can mean 2-3-4 yds down field ....
I am not yet worried or see a problem, but Washington is not Alabama, Fla, or Ole Miss....

time will tell.

Is a better question if that 3rd and Chavis shite we saw in the first game holds true throughout the season! Locker was the only player Washington could really hype. One quarterback coming off an injury is enough of a superstar to convert damn near every third down against a defense full of 4 and 5 star athletes?

Nobody is expecting MIRACLES at UT..We first ONCE in the last 10 years beat a team BADLY that we were supposed to beat..It was great to see the players running off the field..going to their position coaches...no delay of games..NO MORE FULMER OVER THERE CLAPPING LIKE A DAMN TRAINED SEAL WHETHER IT WAS GOOD OR BAD.. Eric Berry said he was more prepared MENTALLY than he was for any game at UT..each player got "NOTES" on the player they would be going up against or what to look for in certain formations...THE OLD STAFF NEVER DID THAT...Nobody is expecting to beat Florida or Bama..Get real..but nobody is expecting to lose to Miami of Ohio either...Fulmer and Chavis ALWAYS made those games interesting..

All of this shite of John Chavis and the defense carried UT for years..is just that BULL shite..Remember the 92 Alabama team..Had the GREATEST defense I ever saw..and an a good running game..."Brother" Bill Oliver was a great DC..

Chavis IMO done better in the press box than he did on the field..he NEVER talked to the players and NEVER showed emotion of any kind..not saying he needed to run up and down the sideline like Holt from UW.,.but Chavis never changes expressions on his face..and never says anything to his players..The guy is a GREAT lb coach..Your lb's will get better..But as far as being one of the "ELITE" defensive coordinators in college football he is far from it..IMO..he has great stats at the end of the year but against the ELITE teams he struggles and in a tight game he makes the average quarterback look like the next Joe Montana..go back and look at the passing yardage the last 5 or 6 years and I guarantee..They had their career game..If they did'n't they weren't far from mit...and the talent thing has been thrown out the window since he let it be known in Knoxville "HE HAS MORE TALENT IN BATON ROUGE THAN HE HAD AT ANY POINT IN HIS CAREER AT UT".. and you will never hear an opposing coach say at halftime.."COACH CHAVIS IS SHOWING US SOME LOOKS WE HAVEN'T SEEN BEFORE"..You can bet your last nickel Bobby Johnson knows EXACTLY what to expect from Chavis..there will be "NO SURPRISE" waiting on Vanderbilt..He will play them the same way he has played them since 1994 when he took over for Larry Marmie..

There you are ..."GO GET EM THIRD AND LONG"..

Watched the CST replay of the game. They showed Chavis talking to the players a few times while the offense had the ball. Seemed fired up too...I guess he changed his style of coaching all of a sudden?

Well Maybe Les Miles did something that Fulmer never did if that was the case..Maybe when he WHISPERED IN HIS EAR..He told him either get your shite together or go look for another job!..Those kinds of things will MAKE A PERSON CHANGE>

And another thing..It was all over Knoxville about the Louisiana papers calling out Chavis and the yardage his defense gave up..That NEVER, EVER happened in Knoxville because "he was a former Vol" at least LSU media has the balls to call it like the see it..

Miles is more conservative than Chavis could ever be. If anything he was whispering to him to back the DBs up further and bring less pressure.

During the 2nd quarter, Bob Davie said LSU needed to switch from zone coverage to man-on-man coverage. Davie is a good analyst, not as astute as Gary Danielson, but his comment was correct. The last few years, when he was at Tennessee, Chavis was criticized for being too inflexible to make timely adjustments needed during the course of a game. His defenders said Tennessee didn't have have enough talent to allow him to make the adjustments that he wanted to make.

About two weeks ago, Chavis was quoted as saying LSU's defense has championship talent and, if LSU didn't win, it wouldn't be for lack of talent. I know it was only the first game, that it was a long road trip and a late kick-off (9:30 CDT), but if the defense doesn't get much, much better (including the defensive play-calling) by October 10, Florida will embarass LSU again, except this time it will be in Tiger Stadium.

Sark and his DC were calling plays from the sideline. They seemed to do Ok, if stats are more important to you than actually winning the game.

He might as well have been in the press box. He showed little or no emotions standing of the sidelines with his arms crossed. Where was the fire and emotion that these defensive coaches are supposedly using on these players in practice?
So true...Chavis showed ZERO emotion, didn't really do anything, just standing there with his headset on, so he certainly wouldn't be missed if he was in the press box & more likely to truly 'see' the field to make possible adjustments.
