Not so much; concussions are viewed as mild TBI. No loss of consciousness.

Partially correct. Concussions are viewed as mild TBI, and it is a functional issue rather than a structural problem. However, loss of consciousness does not factor into whether or not an athlete has had a concussion.

Like many of you, I've been wondering thr status of Tebow. One thing that has caught my attention is that earlier in the week, they had one of the doctors in Florida say that you need to take your first hit in practice to be sure that all symptoms are gone, so that it presents no problem w/ crowd noise, etc. I'm sure many of you saw the article as well. Any doctors have any say on this? If what the doctor said are the guidelines they're using, am I correct in thinking Tebow is definetly out for the game?

I don't think he plays.

If you treat concussions, you can extrapolate enough from the limited info given. We know he lost consciousness, which, while not an independent indicator of severity, usually is associated with more severe concussions. We also know as of Tuesday of last week he was still having headaches at rest.

The general protocol for returning a concussed athlete to play is to wait for symptoms to resolve at rest, then begin to bring the athlete back to full speed over days, all the while monitoring whether any symptoms recur. They also will use the neuropsychological testing as a way to reinforce that the athlete is still healing or back to baseline, though it's not an infallible test.

Personally, if I were the UF team doc, knowing what I know there is no way I would let him return this week. I almost always wait at least a week after symptoms have resolved at rest and with exertion. However, it all depends on how he has done symptom-wise this week and how aggressive the medical staff will be in letting him go back.

I don't think he plays, but that's just my best guess.

The bad thing about playing quarterback....you never know when you are going to get hit, and how severe the hit is going to be.

I got knocked out in a HS game, ended up playing again in the second half. Went through a week of practice with no problems. The following game, packed stadium making a lot of noise, I felt dizzy and was blacking out every time I engaged the O lineman. Then, they decided to run up the gut, and that was all she wrote for my evening. Out like a light.

I hope they do the right thing and hold him out at least a month. If he was a boxer and got knocked out, would he be allowed to box in a match again after 2 weeks?

Your anecdote is exactly why I wouldn't let him go back in this week, even if everything looked "normal".

We know enough to know that we have no idea when the brain is truly (if ever) healed, but it's likely a good bit longer after you feel better.

I'd guess Brantley starts (he's earned the chance to play) and plays first series then 15 comes in after.

I hope he plays. It's gonna be sort of a buzzkill for me if he don't. Coach U F Meyer has already laid the ground work for justifying playing him by saying something along the lines of... if he's fully recovered, he's in no more danger or reinjury this week than 6 wks from now.

The part I'm not fully understanding is why is it not an absolute? Playing/Not playing. Right now he is a game-time decision, but this is not an ankle sprain. Maybe this is telling of my lack of medical knowledge.

No Golden Tiger, even if UF knows whether he's gonna play or not, they wouldn't want to disclose that info this early either way. It's to their advantage if LSU doesn't know who'll be their QB

Funny how the mighty Gators and Urban are resorting to posturing to gain some sort of advantage.

Id have thought with their indefensible spread option and the entire 2 deep on defense returning they'd just run we overrated Tigers down like roadkill.

It almost like they're a little apprehensive. Scared even.
