Nelson Stokley. Played with 2 blown knees and a torn up shoulder. When he was a soph. before tearing up first knee he was unfreaking believable. Fast as hell, smallish at 180 but very tough. Played in the Cotton Bowl with a bandage the size of Rhode Island on his knee.
Tore up the other knee halfway throught the year after he had badly seperated and torn the rotator cuff on his non throwind shoulder.
Played his senior year looking like he lost a knife fight. He was TOUGH and did not have much to work with that year. Still led LSU to Sugar Bowl win.

Wasn't Lafell a 3 star coming out of HS? He may end up a first round pick.

Depends on which recruiting site you looked at. ESPN had him ranked really high. 5th WR overall.

If you want to talk about underrated players from that era though, Red Broadnax - the fullback - was a beast as a blocker for Cannon and Robinson.

What about the Chinese Bandits (except Mel Branch)? You rarely hear any of them mentioned individually (again, except Branch) - so that's a lot of underrated players that collectively are legendary, but individually, not so much.

He was highly recruited, though, so I'm not sure he fits the "underrated" category.

And he got more attention than most LSU fullbacks, Jimmy Taylor and Jacob Hester, notwithstanding.

he did not lead shite. He just did enough to get us there our defense got us there.

I was talking about his leadership and his management, and even his ability. Go watch the 2007 games.

I think one good way (but certainly not the only good way) to look at underrated LSU football players through history is to see who had the longest NFL careers relative to their lowly draft status.

Henry Thomas, DT, never All-American, All-SEC, once, as a senior, third round pick of the Vikes. Played for three teams over 14 seasons, 1007 tackles, 93.5 sacks.

Did Johnny Robinson gert any post-season awards while at LSU? Did he ever make All-SEC, even 2nd team?

And, I agree with you about Broadnax.

I would say Matt Flynn. Nobody thought he would lead LSU to the MNC game, and he did. Nobody thought he would make a roster in the NFL, and he did ( by beating Bhrom ( a 1st rounder) for the 2nd string).

If you actually watched the games this year, he was missed really much.

I agree with all of this. I feel he's the "most" under rated because clearly without him LSU wouldn't have won the NC, but a lot of folks just didn't see, until this year, how important he was, even on a talented team.

just in the last 10-12 years:

Eric Alexander
Mark Roman
Brandon Winey
David Jones (as a blocker)

James Gillyard was a very fine player but I don't recall him getting much pub. With Northern and and Gillyard, we could really get after the passer.

I like a lot of the players folks have mentioned, but I have a hard time seeing Herb Tyler, Tommy Banks or Jacob Hester as being underrated.

The "Magic Juan"!

Anyone remember how the animated scoreboard would say this after he nailed a PAT or FG?

I think Rohan had as much or more to do with getting the LSU ship going in the right direction as Herb.

Eddie Fuller, played behind Harvey Williams. Fuller had a 40+ yard TD run to beat Kentucky and the catch everyone remembers against Auburn. Fuller also played 4 years with the Bills, all super bowl teams. And a great guy.
