I'm not saying the grass is in good shape. We should give it another year to grow a root system and if that doesn't work, get new guys to take care of it. IMO under no circumstance should we put turf in Death Valley. When USC, Notre Dame, OSU, UGA, UF, etc., start using turf, I MIGHT reconsider my opinion.

Ohio State had this same problem a few years ago. For some reason the grass just got really REALLY fricked up. And it got so bad that halfway through the year(when OSU had 3 away games in a row before a UM game at home) they re-soded. It was still fricked up.

SO we moved to field tuf and to be honest, it's been better IMO. Ohio State had the astroturf for a while, then went to grass so it wasn't a huge change, but the fact that players we're getting hurt on the TERRIBLE real grass made it a no brainer.

I thought I would hate it but I don't mind it. (UM has the FT as well.) And the Cincinnati Bengals had the same problem with the grass in Paul Brown and went to FT as well.

hey mike, the guy they hired that you say was a Turf manager did not screw up at all. He turned the practice fields around so much that it caught Les Miles attention where Miles asked why the practice fields looked and performed better than Tiger Stadium. They recieve much more abuse on a daily basis throughout the year verses 6 or 7 home games on TS. He was given the title of Horticulturalist and did a great job. He was put under one of the assistants that was later fired for some nonesense. Coach Paul Manieri begged him to stay as well as a few others before he had enough and left. Now the problem with Tiger Stadium lies solely on the names mentioned earlier who manage the field and the problem will not be resolved until they are no longer in "Power"

Are you guys listening? If what tigerturf says is true, this is by far the most important post in this thread, and just goes along with my "typical LSU and La" bashing. And once again shows how LSU usually fumbles away the minutiae(God..I love this long lost word..thank you to the beatwriters covering Saban for reminding me of it!) when right at the doorstep of complete competency and possible perfection.

LSU should know by now that nepotism cost a lil' bit more, you have to give the job to favorite sons, but also should bring in the proper expertise to ensure the job gets done right.

I'm still waiting for the day that the tv networks don't bring additional lighting to do an LSU night game, though LSU has upgraded in that area. I'm still waiting for LSU's field to look better than Olympia on a Friday night. I'm still waiting for the minutiae of Tigerstadium to be fully addressed like BHG, Neyland, Bryant-Denny, DKR-Memorial, etc..facelifted exteriors, remodeled interiors/bowels, audio-video upgrades, their finer details done with finetooth combs.

After LSU gets their new video board, BHG will have one of the smallest, if not the smallest video board in the SEC. No need for us to strive to be like them. No matter how much Tennessee tries, they will still have an erector set of a stadium. I personally don't think LSU needs to spend much money in the interior of Tiger Stadium, other than keeping the bathrooms updated. I like the old, dungeoness look. It's what makes Tiger Stadium, TIGER STADIUM. Also, I don't want to have to pay more money just to sit in a "pretty" stadium. If I want to do that, then I will just become an NFL fan.

Yes, mike I agree, I like the nostalgia of Tigerstadium, but the bathrooms should've been expanded and updated ages ago. Rinsing the dust off the bowels in the offseason wouldn't hurt. The rusty frames and broken windows have gotta go. The new anthem-rock blasted over those busted jambox speakers needs fixing and/or surround sound system,etc..

Giant erector set no longer..

No...you know what's blasphemous? Having LSU players tackled my their own field.

I'm FOR grass. I'm not for shitty grass that tackles our players. Why recruit speed if you're going to give them a slow track to run on?

A big A&M school like LSU should be showing off its chops by having the best grass known to man on its football playing field.

Kudos to Mississippi State.

Take a look at the video posted earlier showing another famous A&M (Texas) school's field that looks just as bad as LSU's did at the end of the season. Does anyone have a picture of Mississippi State's field at the end of this season? I want to see what a really nice field is supposed to look like after a season of football is played on it.

People who know what goes on all say the same thing. The others make excuses like blaming it on the stadium, too close to the river, etc.

So...what do these "people who know" think is wrong with the field. What specifically happened to cause the new sod from 2005 to crap out. If they would say what caused the problem and you tell the people on the rant, maybe it will get back to LSU and they could fix it. Was it fertilized wrong? Was it cross contamination from other varieties of grass? Was it a fungus? Inquiring minds want to know.

Listen up... Here goes everything, I didn't say before because I was hesitant to mention who I was but I learned today that I will recieve a hefty bonus Jan 1 so I will not be leaving anytime soon. As you all read my previous thread about the horticulturalist well that was me. I came in thought I was applying for an assistants position and ended up under an assistant. Upon starting there I had seen the Turf in TS and relized what was happening but being new didn't want to ruffle any feathers by saying anything. The practice fields were a disaster they had not been topdressed or maintained in years due to lack of management. Me and the assistant I was under poored our heart and soul into the practice fields and old Alex Box. If some of you are to blind to notice that the #1 concern I had there was that a certain someone up the ladder, his concept of management is get more for less well thats all and good with materials but not with people and working them months upon months without a day off, we were severely under staffed and needed more help but help never came..... Sorry to blab about that but to the issue of TS. All i heard before i got there was that is drained like a dream and that a 4 inch rain could not rain a game out ha yeah freakin right. The problem arrived when they sodded the field. Yes it was fine for a year but after the first year they did not maintain it topdress, aerify, roll, deep tine aerify, or any other maintenance correctly. Once i opened their eyes to deep tine aerifying it started showing signs of the slightest improvement but Rome was not built in a day. Here is an example to all of you that don't know, and this happened the week of the South Carolina game last year I think can't remember... But they deep tine aerifyed the week of a game and topdressed with a heavy load of sand I know ya'll remember the sand flying but the field was chunking up and people were slipping and sliding everywhere. Example of people who don't know what they are doing and don't know proper timing..Another example has anyone every been in tiger stadium two or three hours before game time for the hilarious pregame watering of the field which is the dumbest thing ever unless it is a freaking droubt..Plus we batted a thousand last year on rain either on game day or the day before....Back to TS it developed a severe sod layer due to the lack of maintenance. In other words the grass could not breath nor could the water get down to the roots through the layer which made it slippery and chunk out. The off color spots were the more stressed areas which caused it to look like it had the measles but noone noticed that due to the unGodly amount of green paint that covered them up.... Now the assistant over TS tried but basically had no say in what got done to TS. FYI all three assistants are no longer there hmmmmmmm wonder what the problem is???? You be the judge. Believe me or not here are pictures to prove it...And I don't care if this does get back to them I am tired of you all as fans being jacked around about the damn truth Last two are for whoever wanted a picture of MS State end of season

Thanks for the clear up Tigerturf. I know the assistant you worked under and heard stories about the practice fields. Too bad BG is not there anymore to help you out.

Damn dude, why the attitude? Who's toes did I step on? I am not really sure who those two people are. I think RH is Haliburton, but I am not sure who TJ is (Trent Johnson?).

Anyways, thanks for the info.

All I have to say to all that is...damn. Not surprising, given I've been bitching about the sad state of the field for nearly 8 years...but damn nonetheless.

Funny you mention The Box. All these idiots talking about warm season/cold season grasses...from my seats in the EU I can easily see the field in AB during football games. It was crazy how much better that field looked than TS's turf. Yes...no one was playing on it. But c'mon!! It's not like TS is some damn high school field that gets 2 games a week plus practices. It gets played on 8 times a season, not counting scrimmages in the pring and late summer. And if it was weather...does AB get warmer weather than TS?!?

Any of you guys still hoping the current people "solve" this problem upon reading this guy's post?

Actually it gives me hope because now we know that we can have great natural turf in Tiger Stadium, under the right control. rather than artificial. That's been my argument from the beginning. Do what it takes to get the real stuff healthy.

Wouldn't we have felt foolish if they installed fake turf and then we found this out. At least we know the truth, or at least we think we do.

Then I assume you're with me when I say that the next time an LSU officials blames the condition of the grass on the upper decks they need to be fed to Mike...right?

Look...I've been fighting this fight (as much as a fan can, at least by making it a topic of discussion) for 8 years. It's always been my belief that we COULD make it better. I'm not sure anyone has really suggested that if we had the ability to grow healthy, playable grass that we should ditch that in favor of the fake stuff. What some of us have been suggesting is that in light of our CLEAR inability to do so for WHATEVER reason (decks, weather, incompetence, cheapness) then an artificial surface should be considered. To do otherwise has always been to accept a shitty playing surface in hopes that it gets better someday.

Further...if the field can be fixed and we can have a truly fine natural grass surface in TS...then WHAT DATE can we expect this? Is it to much to ask those in charge for a solid timeline? It isn;t art...it's grass. Assuming no problems, when will the field be 100% ready after which point we should expect a fine field with the proper maintainence?

I'm willing to wait...but not indefinitely. Given we've been told for nearly the length of time I've been complaining about this issue that they're fixing it, I don't plan on holding my breath.

Well I have to say that they have obviously wised up a little bit they are now going to split up the Grounds part from the facilities part which will make a huge difference. They are interviewing people for the new Turf Manager position I know a guy from MS State that applied for it and all I can say is if they give whoever they pick for the job, full control over the field it will be a hundred times better next season.. Just a little bit to look forward to... I can't get the pictures to do right sorry....

Agreed. I feel there's a WAY to grow healthy turf in TS across an entire autumn - just need to get the Admin to commit to it.
