WTF? You should represent LSU. Wear whatever you want. Neither Purple or Gold is in the Bammers "Color Box". My Color Box includes only Purple and/or Gold (lifetime LSU fan, born in Anniston, Alabama).
Besides, both Purple and Gold are so distinguishable from lame azz common Red that a Purple and Gold mix of colors displayed by LSU fans from the stands looks awesome (IMO) as well, whether viewed from the stadium or from the game on TV.
Bottom line is: Be the same. Be different. But be LSU!!!
