That was the worst season long quaterbacking of an LSU team I've personally ever seen. That goes back to the early 1970's.

the defense cost us the Arky game. they definately lost their focus and committed two really stupid penalties which allowed them to score the winning points. the alabama game loss was more the qb interceptions but in overtime neither our offense or defense allowed us to win. the other games? i don't know but we should have been 9-4 and could have been 10-3 with one good play in ot against bama.

No way in hell. I know it's a judgement call, but the 1994 LSU team that went 4-7 had way worse problems that simply quarterback play. That was Hallman's last of four years as coach, and the team was just awful.

The Auburn game in particular was very difficult, and was indeed marked by poor QB play - 6 interceptions, 5 in the 4th quarter, 3 pick 6's - yes terrible indeed. However, Hallman and Amedee were terrible coaches and kept putting a young Jamie Howard in bad situations.

Compare that to last year, when the playbook was trimmed to the bone to shelter the young QB's, and they still looked like dog poo! And with the exception of Jefferson's improvement from the Arkansas game to the bowl game, the QB's personally got worse with each outing.

Defense. As poor as the QB play was, the Tigers often moved the ball well enough and scored enough points to win.

It might be worth breaking down a bit:

Ga. - 2 pick 6's and the defense was still more to blame. offense actually scored plenty but the D was terrible.

Bama - the D played pretty well in this one. I peg this loss more on the O.

Ole Miss - Ick. This was bad all the way around.

Florida - It may not have mattered because UF was so good but I gotta blame this one more on the D (a 50 point give up is worse than a 21 point offensive outing).

Arkansas - not even close. the D gave this one away.

Some wins:

Auburn - balanced

Troy - gotta give most of the credit for the win to the offense given the high score

GT - balanced effort but I give somewhat more credit to the D.

SC - I would say more credit to the D?

Miss St - more credit to offense?

It was both, but considering pretty much everyone expected the Tigers to struggle on offense given the lack of an experienced QB, I'd put the most blame on the Defense (really the two headed coordinator) as the defense was expected to carry the team until the offense could find its way.

Defense. It's pretty clear the plan was to manage the O (w/Hatch) and play good D. That shite went out the window real quick.

This. Remember, the offense scored 21 or more points in every game except the Ole Miss game, even putting up 38 against GA - take away the two pick 6s, and the defense still allowed 38 points to GA!!! So yes, I'd say defense.

The only game where the blame can squarely be placed on QB was the Alabama game, the one game where the defense truly played inspired, least until the overtime (play calling?). After the Bama game, it seemed like some members of the team just gave up and the team never recovered, thus the end of season tank job.

As quick as some are to blame the QB for the losses, let's not forget the wins that the QB pulled out. Hell, even Troy had their way with our defense and only the offense finally catching fire saved the team from its worst upset ever.

This team has a great deal to prove. Any return to glory must begin with an improved defense.

Exactly. The offense will score plenty of points this year. We just need to the defense to return to form and stop teams from scoring 30+ points.

The defense was suppose to be the strength of the team last year, and the D-line was supposed to be one of the all time greats.

Losses:

Florida- JL having one pick 6 when the game was out of reach vs. Tebow and Co. skulldragging the confused/overmatched defense up and down the field. Winner: Defense

Georgia- JL 2 pick sixes, both at very inoppotune times vs. Stafford/ Mike Bobo sticking a big D up Malleveto's arse. Winner: Push

Bama- JL 4 picks, one pick 6 accounting for the margin of defeat vs. defense's best game of the regular season. Winner: QB play

Ole Miss- JL getting knocked out while true freshman QB doesn't make key mistakes, giving the defense a chance to change the game vs. Malleveto once again getting bent over...this time by Ole Miss OC/Jevan Snead. Winner: Defense

ar-kansas- JJ making some freshman mistakes, but none grievious...doing what was required to win vs. the defense giving up 2 scoring drives in the 1st quarter and completely melting down in the 4th quarter...which single handedly cost us the game. Winner: Defense

Final Score:
Defense: 3
QB play: 1

with one push.

These are the facts, folks.

Receiver's not running proper route's. Its it all about timing. That is why Jarrett Lee performed
so badly last year. Also last years Defense looked
like Ned in the First Reader.

QB Play. The best defense in the world cannot win with 3 INT's per game...

This is true from a scoring standpoint, with the defense giving up 38 points while the offense scored 38 points (the difference in the 52-38 score was the the two pick 6s). However, I still think the defense should not be giving up 38 points so I put that loss on the defense as well.

is this a trick question?

defense. no doubt about it. not even close. the percentage of plays that the qb caused bad results is not even close to how bad the defense played. the defense was constantly lost

They were equally horrible. Been a long time since I've seen QB play or defense (Curley era) that bad. Even Herb Tyler's first game straight off the scout squad made the QB play (other than the last 3 games) look like little league.

QB play demoralized the whole team, including the defense, which had to go clean up JL's messes (when they weren't pick 6's anyway)
