a zone can work if everyone does their job, defensive ends contain the play, defensive backs are aware of the location of the ball, the line pressure the qb

I don't mind the zone play I just wish they would play tighter to the LOS.
We have PP on one he should knock the hell out of every WR he faces right off the line.
See, that is thinking and I agree with it. 15 yards off the receiver is a bit much.
All this man coverage talk leads to broken hearts, drinking problems and abused pets.

Have we prevented the big play for the past two years?
we played a lot of man coverage last season, a lot more than zone

If you play man coverage in this conference you HAVE to get to the quarterback quickly. You need two shutdown corners, and defensive ends that can rush the quarterback while maintaining control of their rush. These are two things that LSU does not have in the starting lineup. I believe Peterson will develop into a great corner, but he is not there yet.

This makes a lot of sense to me.

I do agree (and based on the threads since the game so do most people) that there should be more pressure and disrupting of the opposing offense. It isn't strictly a question of man coverage vs. zone coverage though. I believe every defensive coordinator employs both at different times, and sometimes combinations. Think back to 2003 in the championship game-- Marcus Spears was in zone coverage when he intercepted that pass that he returned for the TD.
Also, the game continually evolves. Since the early 2000's, various iterations of the spread have become prevalent. What worked defensively 5 years ago may not work as well now against offenses that have become more spread oriented.
That is not to say that all is fine and dandy. The last year or two it seems LSU doesn't get to the quarterback very well, and gets nickel and dimed to death if they try. Other teams seem to do a better job of applying pressure-- whether from running man or zone based schemes, I don't know.
At times, I thought LSU's defense looked much improved this past weekend. But I was also frustrated at their inability to really stop UW. If nothing else, LSU's defense got a sh*tload of reps this past weekend, was able to get a lot of players in for meaningful reps, and should have a lot of game film to use for improvement. What I hope to see as the season unfolds is an improved ability to apply pressure with the front four, and disguising pressure and coverage better so they don't get burned as much when they blitz, etc.

The biggest problems I can see with playing man to man are named Jai Eugene and Chris Hawkins. If they can do it, then I'm all for it. I just don't think they can right now.
