I don't think we lost all aggression under Pelini. And we had some good defenses in those years. But Pelini had a lot of talent and nothing he put on the field came close to the dominance of '03.

Have you been watching the games. If you hit the QB or a WR too hard this year, you risk getting a penalty. The NCAA is trying to implement flag football.

There are just NO leaders on the D-line...that is the problem imo! No one to light a fire under their asses

While I agree with you on this, a lot of the agression and emotion comes from the Def. coaching.

Come on peeps . Agression gets you roughing the QB ...15yds . Anger gets you late hit out of bounds ...15 yds . Last years D had plenty of that and they sucked.
Playing agressively means picking the right time to blitz or pull back into coverage. Playing with urgency (not anger) means gang tackling and hitting hard.
Last years D had Agression and Anger.
This years D is more controlled agressivness and urgency.
Watch and learn.

I have to agree with you on alot of this. People always talk about how emotional Saban was on the sidelines, but our defense's under him played with very little emotion and very little ego. They were simply machines geared to stop offenses. Very efficient, very brutal and very effective.

Much of this is revisionist history. Only the '03 and '06 defenses didn't come under much criticism at some time or another during their respective seasons. I can promise you, nobody was felating Saban over his '00 and '01 defenses at the time. And in '05 and '07, people literally hated Bo Pelini's guts and thought he was a terrible, "soft zone bullshite" DC.
That said, I think you make a good point about this year's squad. I liked what someone said about the '03 defense in another thread--that they were pissed off at the offense for merely having the audacity to run a play. Besides talent, there is a certain intangible quality that that defense had, that this one currently lacks.
