But Pelini had a lot of talent and nothing he put on the field came close to the dominance of '03.

by your own statement, nothing saban did came close to the dominance of '03.

Muschamp was an animal on the sidelines.... smacking kind on the helmet, shoving them around.

Got the kids fired up to play.

according to some on this site, if these kids cant get fired up to play then there is something wrong with them.

last year the team was hyper-aggressive, hitting people hard after they had already made a huge gain on the play, dancing around, talking shite, getting personal fouls, kicking the football, etc. like a bunch of bullshite bullies. and they sucked, they were hiding their insecurity. now they play like they are more emotionally-balanced and confident, like they are biding their time and pacing themselves for the big battles to come. the 2003 defense wasn't angry. they stopped you and went off the field. and did it again and again. they were like a pro defense. workmanlike. we will know more after tomorrow

"...the 2003 defense wasn't angry. they stopped you and went off the field. and did it again and again. they were like a pro defense. workmanlike. we will know more affter tommorrow."

That mindset went away when Pelini took over. Pellini's defenses looked good on paper, they padded their statistics by beating up on lesser teams. He kept people like Landry in the 4th Q in blowout wins. Many players delivered nasty hits after the opponents made a big play. They took out a lot of players, but they were less effective in stopping them from gaining yards.
His defenses sucked when they went against high octane offenses like Arkansas. Pelini's highly ranked units were shredded in 2006 and 2007, as McFadden and co ran at will.

I'm not going to get pressed into this love-Nick/hate-Les mold or vice-versa. I love LSU X1000 above and beyond any HC.

That said, I think Nick had a vision for what kind of D he wanted at LSU. He stayed the course. The talent level continued to improve and all the pieces (scheme/personnel) came together in '03. The '03 sets the standard for D in recent times. There was a slight drop-off in '04. If you look at stats across '03-'04 only the UGA '04 game stands out.

After Saban left, our talent level on D hasn't declined. In fact, I would argue that it's even improved since (kudos to Les). But our performance on D hasn't been the same since.

Name one time in the Pelini era (that's three full seasons) where our D stifled a great offense (like UGA '03 (2X), OU '03, AU '04). Probably the closest would be ND in the Sugar Bowl. Conversely, I can point instance after instance where Pelini’s D’s looked lost or ill-prepared against even average offenses. And he didn’t want for talent.

Biggest complaint of Les is that he has no vision of dominance on defense. Chavis is only a slightly above average DC. That’s what his track record shows over 14 yrs at Tenn and now 4 games with us. Nonetheless, we’re playing better, he’s getting us some TO’s (which are huge), and we can win it all this year.

Sound statement. Lavalais, Webster and company were not big demonstrators post play. Would love to see that type of play again. The post-play woofing has no bearing on the game's outcome, other than to possibly fire up the other team.

From 2000 to 2007, when an LSU defense blitzed someone was getting lit up and having to pick themselves up off the ground, even if the DBs got burned someone paid a price for it.

Did you not see Miss St. QB get pounded last week? Same with the other games.

What hurts LSU defense is playing 60+ plays per game. A blitz is helped with fresh legs, especially in the 4th quarter.

I can not add to this because some are right. The intensity is now in Tuscaloosa. It did follow Nick Saban. Our defense has that edge since he arrived. He is a good coach and I said this when he was at LSU. Sorry but.......it is what it is

Part of that is Alabama is so desperate for a return to the top of college football. People want to win. That unifying goal is key.

LSU has two championships in less than 10 years. I would argue that we are not as hungry as before. That teamed with EVERYONE having us as a target is a pressure cooker.
