Cosmo ,
I know that LSU was doing Tiger Bait by the time they won the National Championship in 1958. My guess is that it had been around for a while because a lot of elementary school ( grades 1-6 back then ) football teams , cheer leaders and fans ( parents ) were ____ Baiting each other back then. You know , " trickle down fan behavior ! "

My guess would be that Florida , " pre-Spurrier , the player " , wasn't Baiting too many teams !

My father yelled it when I was a kid, say circa 1960. Don't know when UF began.

Don't matter who had the bait first, it matters who catches the most crystal fishes!

I read an article about TigerBaiting a long time ago, it might have been in the Reveille or Advocate in the late 70's or early 80's. They interviewed the LSU fan known as "Big Red". That guy had an unbelievable booming voice that could be heard in the entire stadium.

The article credited him with coming up with it and popularizing it. He even commented on why he used "bait" in it. He basically said it just sounded and fit in better than anything else he could come up with.

I'm 50 and have heard it all my life. LSU definitely had it first.

We were doing it at Tiger Stadium in the 50’s. Did Florida even have a football team then?

My dad said they were doing the Tiger Bait cheer in the 40's.
Florida finally got a football team in the 1980's.

Like some of the other posters, I have heard "Tiger Bait" for as long as I can remember, and my Grandfather says that they were chanting it back in the 40's. Let's assume that both teams have been "baiting" for as long as they've had football. Since LSU had a football team 13 years before Florida, I'll go with "TIGER BAIT".
I don't mind the jaws/gator chomp, as long as it's a controlled chomp that doesn't invade a Tiger fan's space. Last year this one jackhole was hitting a Tiger fan on top of the head with his "chomp". Security escorted him out for his own safety.

i always thought flor did it first. don't know if they stole it from someone. i think we stole thier first down song too. at least that's what flor fans tell me everytime i hang out with them.

I don't know when Florida started using the chant, but LSU was doing it when I first came to school here in 1974...and it was an OOOOOOOOOOLD tradition.

I agree that it really doesn't make sense, but it is kind of cool.

And Florida and LSU's first down songs don't sound anything alike. Now if you want to talk about Florida and Bama's first down songs that's another story.

And while I like "Tiger Bait" and people get it, it really doesn't make sense because bait is used to catch something. In our case, the bait, whichever mascot that might be, would be used to catch the tiger.

Bait gets eaten. It's not about the trap, it's about the bait that gets eaten in the process. It's not meant to be taken literally, as in 'they're setting a trap for us and they are the bait'. It's meant to say, you are prey that will be eaten by the Tiger.

We tried yelling "Zebra meat" during an Auburn game in 1957, but it pissed off the refs and we haven't gotten a good call agains Auburn in half a century.
