How about players just being themselves instead of another guy

We tried that and got shut out. I'd be ok with trying a winning formula.

I was thinking how did LSU let TE Smith out of the state.

because LSU signed the better TE prospect in that 2016 class. Jamal Pettigrew (4 star) 6'6" 230 was the #9 TE in the country and 16th ranked player in LA. Irv Smith Jr. (3 star) 6'4" 230 was the 22nd ranked TE in the country and 27th ranked in LA.

Smith's dad played at Notre Dame as it was pretty obvious in the recruiting process that Smith Jr. wasn't real interested in LSU. He was all A&M until decommitting 1 week before NSD. Went on his ALA official visit at the last minute and was a silent commit to the Tide.

Sadly, even if LSU had Jason Whitten or Tony Gonzalez on the roster, they would be used as run blockers and under utilized in the passing game. LSU's last great TE was David Lafluer - 20 years ago

In other words, LSU didn’t see Smith’s potential at TE. I don’t remember LSU making much effort to recruit Smith.

Football games are won by the big uglies in the trenches. Clemson didn't run the ball much....but their OL was not bullied.
Case in point...After some CU run plays Bama DL bear hugging for lack of term CU RB...CU OL detecting this
comes over...engaging UA OL...let go @SShole
