re: With a win, Miles will be LSU's best bowl coach ever

so only the BCSNC game counts in bowl wins or is meaningful?
In reality? Yes. It's the only one that gives you a legitimate championship. The rest are nice and all, but are purely exhibition games. It's nice to give the "we finished the season in the top 10/top 5" after bowl games, but not all bowl games are created equally.
Any game chosen purely based on which teams would bring the most money in rather than performance is why bowls outside of the NC are meaningless.

Saban lost one bowl game to UT in which LSU was well undermatched in 2002. We had Randall at QB, and he was freaking hurt. Rick Clausen was his backup, and UT was loaded that year.

Saban lost his other bowl game to Iowa in his last game when it was obvious he didn't care. People make way too big of a deal about that game.

Just like they murdered Kansas that year.
I am sure they'll be playing in pretty much freezing weather and with an injured Jason White. I love how people forget that.
That 2003 OU team gets so much hate for a team that dominated all but one game prior to the BCS NC game. They destroyed how many teams that year? They had 1 game in the regular season within a TD.

I am not a Saban lover, believe me. I don't like the man at all. I just love how people put way too much into these bowl games for ANY coach.

But you excuse Saban for losing to Texas and Iowa, yet you discredit Miles for beating Ohio ST,Notre Dame,Miami, and Georgia Tech.
How can you not put much into these bowl games when we are playing some of the better teams "names" in college football.Winning aginst such teams is huge and something to be proud of.

I am not discrediting Miles. I am simply saying people make too big a deal over bowl games. Outside of the BCS NC game, they are completely meaningless in reality.
The only time in the past 10 years that LSU has been out-talented by a team is the 2003 Cotton Bowl. Plain and simple.
Is DiNardo a better coach than Saban? He was 3-0 in bowl games. Never lost!
The point is Miles does a great job getting the team ready for bowl games, but people claiming how we are dominating top 10 teams in every bowl are just full of shite.
2007 LSU was the best team in the country, but tOSU wasn't the second best. I think most agree with that.
2006 Notre Dame was shite.
GaTech who was #14 was a one dimensional team that can be dominated when given time to game plan for their offense.
I just love how people complain about how bad the ACC, Big Ten, and Notre Dame are and then turn around and act like beating teams from those conferences is some amazing feat.

Why did you bring up Gerry DiNardo?

Only once has that bowl game actually been meaningful (2007). Every other year it was a glorified exhibition that means very little outside of BS post-season rankings.
Hey, if you want to see a Sugar Bowl BCS win against a ranked ND team as not "meaningful", knock yourself out. I think you are just showing your agenda, but each to our own.
I find it interesting/telling that you find ways to explain away Nick losing bowl games and then go on to tell us how the Miles wins, but for one, mean nothing.
There is no such animal as a non-meaningful game...bowl game or otherwise. If you think there is, lets wait to see the reaction around here if we lose to Penn St.

I agree with you on this.

He did beat Saban in a bowl....
Just my opinion but I think all bowls that LSU is in are huge, I'm very excited to watch LSU play Penn St. on New Years day.

All I know is that Miles will need to have a great season next year. When is his contract up?
Posted on 12/26/09 at 5:41 pm to LSU40
Bowl wins are important. If you win, you take that momentum into recruiting and spring practice. Usually, teams that win their bowl games are ranked high in the preseason polls. If LSU beats Penn State, we will be ranked in the top 10 to start 2010.

Question is what is a great year?

4) In all of Miles' bowl games, LSU has been overwhelmingly the more talented team with MAYBE the exception of the 2005 bowl game. In that game Miami didn't seem to care early in the game.
5) I'd say LSU had a hell of a tougher opponent in 2003 (OU) than they did in 2007 (tOSU). 2003 OU would have murdered the 2007 tOSU team by 30+ points likely.
You just downed all the Miles coached teams and did exactly what Lonnie4LSU was talking about.
And i like how state all these like its a fact.

I don;t want to win mediocre bowl games I want our program on the biggest stage, every year that we have the talent to do so! With the resources Miles has he should en able to coach from the damn golf course and have success.
-
Bama, Georgia and Florida have the same resources.
You cannot guarantee anything with 6 SEC teams in the rivals top ten of recruiting.
LSU is #9, right now.
Notice that makes LSU #6 out of 6.

Too bad that only one of those bowl wins meant anything.

If we win the bowl game no one can say anything about his bowl game preparation

Again, I have read many times on this board people claiming Miles is 4-0 in bowls and Saban was 3-2, while at LSU.
In reality, I don't think anyone with any common sense on this board would claim Miles is a better coach than Saban. That said, bowl records are overrated. They are a nice stat, but mean very little in the long run. That was my entire point.
While bowl games are fun and awesome to watch, especially when LSU gets to play historic big name schools like PSU, they are still exhibitions UNLESS they are the NC game. BCS games are nice too, and give more notoriety, but again, outside of the NC game they are picked based on who will get them the most money.
Miles is a good coach, but name ONE team that was actually better talent-wise than LSU in any of his bowl games? I'd hope given a month to prepare that we'd win the games where we have more talent and depth than our opponents.
In the end, Miles is a good coach, and I expect us to beat PSU. I just laugh at people talking about bowl wins as some great indicator. They aren't.

1 more bowl domination in the peach/chic-fil-A bowl by Miles and they should name that bowl after him.

Miles has been to 2 Peach Bowls, the same number of times Saban has been to the former Weedwacker Indy Bowl in Shreveport. Peach Bowl pays a helluva lot more BTW.
Although...the Nick-Fil-A Bowl has a nice ring, and likely to be in the Gump's future Bowl game plans.
