you can buy some common or preferred stock but if you only have 10k to invest i would put it in a mutual fund or funds,some for capital gains and some for dividends(IRA maybe? and some in a tax free investment fund that invests in munibonds without you having to actually buy the munibond and have to worry about the maturity date,etc?)depending on what your goals are.
