made damn good money - but it was whittled away by taxes, alimony and child support.
I often get upset about not having a wife and kids, but that also means I’ll never really have to deal with these issues and I’ve witnessed so many friends that have been strangled by Hugh alimony and especially child support. Yes, it’s supposed to go to the kids which they do plan to support, but that burden can be placed very unfairly by our courts of law.

Just an insane thing to consider paycheck to paycheck.
Yep, but I have more downvotes than upvotes.

Re-stating the obvious: how would these stats look when they jettison the things they couldn't afford in the first place?

Marrying the right person is a financial super booster. Date someone long enough to learn where they stand on major issues and what their habits are. Then all you have to do is not marry someone that you have major differences with and think that you love them so much it'll never matter.

My wife’s financial knowledge and discipline was the major factor in our doing as well as we have in retirement. It was something that was easy to recognize while we were dating. Conversely my first wife was a financial train wreck, and even though I saw it as a problem while were dating being young and stupid I married her anyway.
