It's never a bad idea to pay off your debt, especially if you have the income to do so. The idea that deductible mortgage interest is better than no mortgage payment is odd to me.

Not quite what I said - eliminating a tax deductible payment is worse than the return on investing in something else that is reasonably conservative and with a similar duration.
If you buy shares of a target retirement fund and hold onto it for 30 years no matter what (that part is important), your return will almost surely be better than paying off a mortgage with a low enough return. This isn't much of a gamble by the way.
This isn't a generic "investing in the market". It's a pure buy and hold strategy of a fund designed to protect your assets into retirement. If the plan is to speculate in individual stocks then I'm not so sure.
