There is nothing harder in the world than being an ortho guy. Not a whole lot work out without some help from an established ortho rep. I would not do it without being a jr. guy to an established race horse.
Ortho guys in solo territories never get a day off, like ever. No drinking, on call every day and night. No vacations. Oh, you can try...but the minute they call and you arent avail to work them thru you get strike 1,2, and damn near 3. My experience is they will put you in timeout.
That is in a smaller area with one rep. If you are in a large metro area, ignore all I said.
I started as an associate rep with a major ortho company in Greater New Orleans territory. I did hip and knee replacements only and we had a team of 7 guys to handle the whole territory. I was "on call" back to back weeks every 4 weeks or so. It doesn't sound bad but like previously mentioned, you are basically always on call. I was 30 years old, not married, no kids, and it was miserable. The other reps all had families and missed multiple events (birthdays, holidays, weddings, vacations, etc.). There was constant bitching within the group. My base was $65K and I got a small bonus from time to time. I stuck it out for 3 years there and was approached by a recruiter for another position in pain/spine. No call, no emergent cases, quick and easy procedure, no running trays for sterilization, nicer physicians. Doors will open if you can prove yourself in ortho, but be ready to work your arse off for minimal pay.
Good luck.
