Goffin fighting his tail off and ground out a tough service game to go up 4-2 in the first set, only to have the ump come out late to check a mark and call the ball in. The hawkeye that Tennis Channel has showed it a foot out, so they checked the wrong mark. It ends up being a 16 minute game, and of course, Rafa breaks.

Damn that's brutal. Maybe it's better that he didn't have to lose a 3-hour grindfest though.

I was so mad for Goffin after that. That inexcusable reversal took the life out of him.
Why didn't he or the ump just ask the line judge to come show them the CORRECT ball mark..the one about 7 inches away from the one that was being pointed at. Nobody bothered to ask him.

Routine win. 10 Monte Carlo, 9 Barcelona, 7 Rome, 9 French Open.
Gimelstob: "Rafa really struggles in Rome."

For all the people still questioning his clay court chops.

Ilie Nastase apparently lost his mind this weekend. This was his comment on Serena's pregnancy:
Then he snapped at a chair ump and called the British players fricking bitches.
quote:
"Let's see what color it has," Nastase said in Romanian on Friday during a press event, according to ESPN. "Chocolate with milk?"

He's clearly not a warrior for social justice.

How can Rafa get a top 4 seed at RG?
Unfortunately, winning Monte Carlo doesn't do anything for him points-wise as he won it last year as well. Same deal with Barcelona -- he'll have to win the tournament outright to keep his current points level at 4235. The good news is that he probably will win that tournament outright.
Current standings after Monte Carlo --> link to live rankings
1. Sir Andy -- 11,690
2. Novak -- 8085
3. Stanimal -- 5695
4. Fedsmug -- 5125
5. TGGRN -- 4235
6. Ballet-feet Raonic -- 4165
7. Kei Nishikori -- 4010
The 1, 2, and 3 spots aren't moving. The 1 and 2 spots definitely aren't moving. There is a mathematical chance that Rafa could end up ranked #3 before RG, but it involves Rafa completely winning out as a prerequisite, and Stan having even worse results this year at Madrid and Rome than he did last year (or having similar results and doing less than winning Geneva). I don't see it happening. Even if Rafa were to win out -- which he probably won't do -- I don't see Stan picking up only 10 points at Madrid again this year. So, we'll just call the first 3 spots solid and move right along.
Federer skipping out on the clay court season doesn't really hurt him that much because he only has 90 points to defend. He'll lose those 90 points, bring his 5125 down to 5035. So Rafa needs to gain 801 points to get a top 4 seeding at RG.
I shouldn't simply count on Rafa winning Barcelona, but I'm going to go ahead do just that. I'm going to assume he wins his 10th title at his hometown event. The draw just doesn't look that scary to me. As I see it, his toughest test will be in the semis against Goffin or Cuevas. If he gets past that, I think it's his. I can't imagine Andy Murray beating him on clay right now. If I'm right, that will keep him at 4235.
He has two more events to get 801 points. At Madrid he has 360 points to defend. At rome he has just 180. So that's 640 + 820 = 1460 possible points.
I won't go through all the possibilities, but getting to the finals at Rome would be a major help. And if he wins Rome and merely gets to the semifinals of Madrid, he's got it. If he only gets to the finals of Rome, he would need to win Madrid. If he wins Madrid, he would have it by getting to the semifinals in Rome. Historically, he does the worst at Rome (as noted by Bunk).
Does it really matter if he's a 5 seed at RG? I'm not so sure it does. The past two years I would have said otherwise as i didn't believe he could beat Djokovic on any surface, even clay, and it would piss me off if he drew him in the quarters. But I'm thinking right now he would be a significant favorite over the Serb, so perhaps I'm more worried about this than Nadal and his camp are.
I'm okay with that.

I don't think people have any idea what racist means anymore. This comment isn't racist, at all. It's dumb, unfunny, and crass. Kinda cringy coming from someone of his stature. But nothing about it is racist. Racist would be, "will the kid turn out to be an accountant or a thief."

I love the MC, Madrid, Rome M1000's stretch as a teaser for RG. It's not my type of tennis, but I do enjoy it played well, especially Rafa's virtuosity dans la terre battue.

If I were a Rafa fan, I would only be concerned if he was unseeded and had to go through 3 or 4 of the top guys in a row. And even then, the "top guys" are Murray, Joker, Stan, and possibly Thiem or Kyrgios. I can't imagine he fears any of them on dirt right now.

The way Nadal has been playing this year, no doubt he is the favorite to win RG. Doesn't matter where he is seeded or who he has to go through. Nadal is healthy, playing well, and winning. Give him confidence, and especially on clay, he already has the tournament won.

I agree. Outside of injury, I don't think anybody touches Nadal at the French.

I dated a black girl for a few years and I can assure you that if I had knocked her up, and if someone had made a comment about the kid being chocolate with milk, my response would have been "yeah, that sounds about right..but after you stir the milk."
Like, it would have bothered me none at all.
I guess I'm an outcast from outrage nation.

The confidence thing is the overwhelming X factor for Rafa. He's not like Smug, who has never doubted for even a second that he was the greatest player to ever walk the earth, or any other presently undiscovered planets where they might play tennis.
Rafa walks around with self doubt. But right now his confidence level is clearly solid -- he's hitting at lines, he's attacking the net, etc. -- so I cannot disagree with your assessment. He's definitely the favorite.

Well, duh. Gambling is clearly illegal in this country. I can't imagine anyone having the audacity to knowingly violate federal statutes on a routine basis. That'd be pure lunacy.

At first glance I see Goffin and Sock as good value plays.
