Thiem?

Still too inconsistent. As much as I would like to see him tone down the power, it probably won't happen.

I was not aware that Rafa won an ATP match when he was 15 years old. That's nuts.

My brother got hit in the stomach by an Inser serve at match4Africa. I guess that's sort of cool.

Click "vs. Rank" and put 11+ and ignore 2016 and get back to me.

I don't see how having success against lesser players makes him a threat against TGGRN.

I said he "could" pose a challenge. You are making it out to be something else for the sake of an argument. Del Potro is 40/1 at least to win FO. Common sense says he's not a threat.

Put another way...

If I had to pick 1 guy right now to beat Nadal in a match at RG, I would take Del Potro over everyone except Joker and Wawrinka, and that includes Murray.

He's less of a threat than Dominic Thiem

I would humbly disagree. Stanimal and Djoko have it in them to beat Rafa on clay in five sets. I do not think that Del Potro does. ie. I wouldn't give him much of any chance at all to beat Rafa.

But the first set was evenly played. Thiem could have taken it with a slightly different bounce of the ball here or there. And if that happens, I don't think he folks like he did in the second set. Also, Rafa was on fire in that second set.

I think if Thiem played Rafa on clay 10 times, he'd win at least one match.
I do not think that if Delpo played Rafa on clay 10 times that he would get even a single W.

I would take the over on that. Thiem is a rising star.

It would be pretty easy to prove that both of these assertions are way off base, but it's not worth the effort.

If it 's so easy, then surely it would be worth the effort. Please do take a stab.

I mean, my thoughts on Thiem v. Delpo on clay are not fodder for an argument, and I don't think them unreasonable. If one disagrees, one can present an argument to the contrary.

What I find notable is Delpo's record against top 10 players on clay. He's 5-10, which is simply not very good. LINK

On top of that, his inability to hit through a backhand will be more of a problem on clay than any other surface. His slice backhand is a very pretty shot and it doesn't hurt him because he keeps it very low and deep. But on clay, you can't keep it low, or at least as low. The ball will pop up more than it does on hard or grass, and, as such, becomes a liability rather than a neutral shot.

This would be especially problematic against Rafa, who would feast on that slice and would give delpo very few forehands to look at. And the ones he gives him are going to be on the run, and not the type where Delpo would have a chance to crack one of his famous nuclear forehands.

I both like Delpo's game and Delpo himself. I root for him when he isn't playing Rafa, and I think he can win a major even with his limitation on the backhand wing.

But I don't think he can win RG.

For a 5 set contest?

I would set it at 1.5. And if I found a book that had it listed at anything higher than 1.5 I would bet heavy on the under.

I think Thiem can win RG at some poiint. He's got the ability, but right now his game is lacking in nuance. There's a time and place to just crack the ever-loving shite out of the ball, but that time and place is not "on every single shot". And it sort of seems that that's what he's doing at present.
