you don't "naturally adapt" to playing first base. eventually those balls being thrown across the infield will be at 80+ mph and all over the place
put him there now

14 isn’t way before high school… probably half of freshman are 14

It doesn’t matter the talent. There’s a reason there are no college, mlb, or high school lefty infielders, other than first baseman

yes it does. best player should play at the position.

then he should continue to play the position along with whatever rotation is already in place per coach with his team. Whether he pitches some or gets rotated to the outfield some (big believer in this) or a convo with the parents as to what they deem is appropriate.
But if the kid is still performing better than the rest, he shouldn't be move strictly cause he's a lefty with no other appropriate context.

then he needs to be playing against much better competition
if that means he is currently playing rec...he should go travel....
if he is playing aa travel ball, go play aaa
if in aaa, go play majors
sorry but if you are the most talented shortstop as a lefty....you need to play better competition.

my brother was advised let him play shortstop left handed as long as he possibly can… the 3 and outfield positions he will naturally adapt to…
What’s the point, though? As far as naturally adapting, playing OF and, to a lesser degree 1B requires a very different skill set. Playing SS for as long as he can just so he can say “I play SS” seems counterproductive.

same as every coach, to win. you play the kids at the spots that help make the team the best product as possible so they win and have fun playing the game. Let the highschool coach play him where he needs to play. I'd say having a conversation with the parents about the future of where the kid might end up playing as it relates to how they want him played now to prepare is a fair convo.
eta: would love for op to lay out the specific deets on his situation as it relates to his bias in said decision being made.

Based on previous posts, that’s already happened and is the root of the issue. In youth baseball, SS is the glamour (for lack of a better word) position, much like QB in football. Practically every baseball parent would love to hear, “Leave him at SS.”
Short term, that’s fine. Long term, it COULD be detrimental to his ultimate development for the position he will eventually play.

i missed his posts earlier.
additional thoughts:
I wouldn't worry about adapting a stud SS to playing first base, he's probably better suited anyways to transitioning to OF over 1B if he has SS skillsets and arm.
I think most kids need to develop some OF skills so i would be okay with him rotating between CF and SS.
Again, depending on the kids skill sets and arm talent, i wouldn't discount catcher. Kid's got to love the position but i think the idea that lefties can't play catcher is HIGHLY overrated AF.

It’s my brother decision in the end … but my line of thinking aligns with most in the thread… this the time he could be mastering the position he would eventually have to play… the competition he playing against not that bad he just good at baseball… when I say good as a 12 year old i don't mean he a “weight bully” for lack of a better term… he actually small for his age growth spurt ain’t came yet… couple people my brother has talked to agree with you though… to leave him in the infield until the talent catches up…

Guess you’ve never actually played baseball then at any level higher then rec
Do you not think there are “best “ players that are left handed at the college/HS/MLB level?
Not odd to you that maybe 0.1% of them play SS..?
GTFOH

you suck at arguing. the kid is the best ss on the team still. sounds like we might be talking about 11-12 year olds at most and you're talking about college and mlb non sense.

na...never happening in HS baseball at a competitive level. bigger waste of time than SS

i dont care what the video says....lefties do not play catcher at competitive HS programs. Argue all you want...not happening. same with any infield position other than first or pitcher....just not happening.

interesting thought excercise
what is the highest level the best left handed shortstop could play?
like a guy with all the physical attributes and instincts and technique of future gold glover, when does being left handed give way to a significantly less talented rig ur handler?
could they be better than a guy who doesn’t play in college?
or varsity HS ball?
