You don't want to be wrong about something like this. Blogs and twitter accounts are one thing, but ESPN would lose a shitload of credibility if it misreported a death (rightfully so).

ESPN knows about the situation. They can't come out with any info as serious as life/death until they are 100% positive about the information they are releasing.
