Closest they ever came but screwed the pooch and lost to Miami 49-45 on a make-up game ending their 20 game winning streak...after No. 2 Kansas State lost 36-33 in double overtime to lose the Big 12 title.

Cade McNown was 26 of 35 passes for 513 yards and 6 TDs and still lost.

UCLA would have played UT for the title.

During that entire year, I always thought that UCLA team was very overrated. They couldn't play a lick of defense to save their lives. I wasn't that impressed with Florida State either. Tennessee, Ohio State, and Kansas State were clearly the three best teams in the country that year IMO.

Since 1980 I would look at programs like Texas A&M, UCLA, Arky..... If you looked at teams that have only one 1 in that time frame there would be some decent heavyweights in there like Michigan, Tennessee, and UGA

Syracuse has had two top ten finishes since 1980.

West Virginia has had five since 1980.

Yeah, their defense was wishy-washy...giving up 28.3 points per game. And they did give up 38 points to Wisky in their Rose Bowl loss.

They are the big one. They should have more than 1 National title 60 years.

USC won 2 NC's in the Pete Carroll era, administrative retractions notwithstanding.

Oklahoma's asses did not become magically unkicked
after the NCAA's ruling.

1985 will probably go down as the year as Iowa's only chance to win a National Title in the modern era. Iowa was ranked #1 for most of the year and defeated #2 Michigan on a last second fg. They went to play OSU in the rain and lost 22-14.

They then lost the Rose Bowl after Ronnie Harmon fumbled 4 times in a game that many thought he threw on purpose.

The really cool thing about Alabama football is that we started playing the sport, keeping records, and winning championships prior to 2003. So, even if what you say is true (which it isn't), we still wouldn't qualify due to our pesky little undefeated 1992 season and arse-whipping of what was supposed to be one of the greatest Miami teams of all time.

And no surprise their best year just happens to coincide with the year Iowa gets busted for "this new problem of agents and athletes we've been hearing written so much after Bush."

quote:

federal grand jury probe into alleged dealings between sports agents Norby Walters and Lloyd Bloom and college athletes. Harmon was among several Iowa players implicated for allegedly accepting improper benefits from the agents.

Shite, from Billy Cannon illegally accepting money from agents to Reggie Bush...the common denominator is...if you're winning somebody is getting quan. You could find reasons to vacate everyone's title in 60 years except 86' PSU and '84 BYU (though I'm not sure, church has serious money.)
