Bay would be helpful, but I don't think he could come anywhere close to what Manny does in the Boston lineup.

You would be surprised.
.283/.376/.520 22/64
.299/.399/.530 20/68

Bay never had protection in Pittsburgh either, so that should help.

You know I actually like this trade from the Sox side if it happens.

A tentative agreement has been reached between the Red Sox, Marlins, and Pirates.

LINK

Marlins get: Manny Ramirez, cash, prospect from Red Sox
Red Sox get: Jason Bay, John Grabow
Pirates get: Ryan Tucker, Jeremy Hermida, one prospect from Red Sox

This has to suck for the Rays who were attempting to trade for Jason Bay. Right when they are on the verge of making a splash, they are reminded why they are the Rays.

"With Jason Bay perhaps out of reach, the Rays are talking to the Reds about Adam Dunn, ESPN's Jayson Stark reports.
The Rays would prefer a right-handed hitter, but with the lineup struggling to score lately, they're becoming more flexible. Dunn would come cheaper than Bay and would provide a major boost against right-handers. Still, the Rays probably won't attempt to finalize a trade until they're sure Bay isn't going to be an option."

They're not done yet.

i disagree

while the sox are getting bay, they are also losing manny. its not like they are getting bay for nothing

the rays should have given up a prospect. trust me, the pirates would have listened had the rays given up the right prospect, and the rays are fricking loaded with prospects

But the question is where will Bay bat in the lineup, third or fourth. If he bats fourth, he won't give Ortiz nearly as much protection as Manny has given him.

I agree, especially since Bay is signed through next season. It wouldn't have been a two month rental and he is relatively cheap (7.5 million I believe). As for Bay in the Red Sox lineup, Bay is more of a three hole hitter and I've always considered Ortiz to be more of a cleanup type, but we'll see.

I just can't believe that they're going to trade away Manny considering how they're in a dogfight for the AL East...probably one of the worst moves the Red Sox have made in years.

New update

The Marlins and Red Sox are certain a deal will get done, but the Pirates are still at risk of being replaced by another team in the deal.
