Agreed. But I think its too late now to trade Dirk. Imo, he's dropping in his ability and quicker than most people think.

The team is still way too old with Dirk, Marion, Brand, Kaman, and Carter although Kaman is an improvement. Collison is probably an improvement over an old Kidd. Mayo has been bad the last two years.

Eta: Playoffs barely. Out in First round.

Well, you need a plus inside defender, such as Chandler. You need very good perimeter defenders, such as Marion and Kidd, and you have to score everytime you go down the court. The Mavs matched up perfectly with the Heat and I saw it before the finals, although I thought it would go to 7.

And you need Dirk.

I blame that on Memphis. They took him out of the starting lineup and his stats hit the toilet. He'll start at SG in Dallas and will probably go back to averaging 15-18 a game.

Definitely. Kidd got scared to shoot and never drove. He went from a pass-first PG to a pass-always PG.

If they can get someone like Al Jefferson(who the Jazz will probable be looking to dump if they have a bad start) the Mavs are legit contenders.

I have them as my darkhorse team in the West next season.

Do I think contender? Nope. But could they get to the WCF depending on matchups and veteran savy?

Yep.

Hmmmmm. They made some decent signings and they had a good offseason, but a lot of people said they had the best offseason. I don't agree with that. With that said, they will be a good team, as long as they are 100% healthy. I see them making the playoffs as a 7 or 8 seed, but they probably won't do much in the playoffs.

I think most of that comes from the situation it puts the Mavericks in as opposed to what it looked like they were going to have to do before about two weeks ago. Had these amazing late signings not happened, Dallas would probably be sandbagging this season and going lotto. Also, it sets them up even better for FA next year than they were this year. They've switched from Dwight and DWill to CP3. If Dirk retires after this season, Dallas will have money running out of their ears.

Imagine what Cuban could do with that cap space on top of the insane amount of space Dallas already has.

Exactly what they did this year--nothing.

Cuban thinks that major FA's will come to Dallas. He had everything lined up for Deron, plus the bonus of Deron being from here. Deron ends up in Brooklyn.

Won't happen. See Deron minus CP3 not being from here.

Bottom line is that unless Cuban can convince Dirk to be traded to a playoff team and get some draft picks to rebuild (then let him return on a one-day deal at retirement) Dallas is looking at being like it's I-45 rival Houston--permanent mediocrity.

I agree with you there as well. These signings are good because they will most likely make the playoffs, and maybe win a series depending on who they play. After a year or so if it doesn't work out, they can make a huge splash in free agency like you said, and they can sign a good superstar to play with Dirk and they can be even better.

Brooklyn rolled out the red carpet and then some for Deron. There aren't going to be many, if any, teams that can offer what Dallas will be able to offer the next few years. If you don't play in LA, New York, Miami, Chicago, Boston, or OKC, Dallas is a step up both national appearance and fanbase wise. I see Dallas making some pretty big deals the next few years. They are certainly set up to do it.
