I wish the Genuine Risk/Secretariat foal would have lived. It would have been interesting to see how that one turned out.

maybe... she didn't really produce anything (in the few pregnancies she had) and he, while good, never really replicated himdelf. would have been pretty! in my opinion, the bold ruler line does produce amazing hunters.

He did have a few great foals...Lady's Secret and Risen Star were pretty good horses. He was a better broodmare sire though.

But I think people expected another Secretariat, which never happened. Don't know if it ever will with the way things are going today in horse racing.

I'd like to hope that one day we'll see another Secretariat or Man o' War.

you know your shite! I was talking yesterday about how he was good to have on the broodmare side. People just glaze over when I start on the horse racing talk. Bold ruler lines do make nice show hunters

Even though Bird is a gelding, don't they harvest some sperm when they do the procedure on racehorses these days so as to have the possibility of later offspring?

Can't register them. It has to be live cover. Maybe you are thinking of quarter horses?

And they have to be registered why?

I ask this because my family is big into quarter horses and artificial insemination is definitely allowed.

ok saw your edit.....I mean if you have the offspring of a derby winner, and this horse is fast as hell, does it matter?

Can't run them unless registered with the jockey club. They are pretty hard core about things. You still can't register one as black, though they do allow white now. I ride a horse now that was apparently a racing quarter. We thought she was a tb but she had a crazy strange lip tattoo. Turns out she's an appendix. Last few good horses have at least had a little qh blood in them.

I'm a huge horse racing fan...I actually subscribe to the Blood Horse. Someone was asking who to pick for the Derby last week and I started going on about bloodlines and post positions. They probably wished they hadn't asked.

I was rooting for Hold Me Back in the Derby because I like Desormeaux. Mine That Bird came out of nowhere...I definitely wasn't expecting that. I did predict almost the correct Derby time though. I was telling someone they'd run it in about 2:02...definitely a sign I watch horse racing too much.

I liked hold me back too. He wasn't in my original exacta bet but I took the $ I won on the race before and put $5 across on him because I had funny feeling when I thought about leaving him out. When they went into the first turn and he was up with the leaders I knew he was cooked. I love giants causeway for some reason. Oh well. It was still a great race. I can't wait til the fairgrounds opens back up. I'm there all the time.

I know, he was doing pretty well about 5 back, but you could tell he wasn't going to keep it up by the way his ears were flattened back. He tired pretty badly.

Mine That Bird must be out of Birdstone's first or second crop. Birdstone was bred for distance, so if he runs the Belmont, I wonder how he'll hold up.

I was always glad Birdstone won the Belmont. I never thought Smarty Jones was that good, and I hated that he "got injured" and never raced again. I still don't believe he was ever really seriously injured...I personally think the owners wanted to protect their stud investment and were afraid he might lose again.

I feel the same way. Smarty was my most disliked horse before big brown came along. Very similar situation with the retirement there. Did you watch brown's haskell? Awful. They retired him because they were scared of more losses(pulling up in the Belmont? Really? They just knew he wouldn't win). They knew they wouldn't be able to keep up with horses like curlin in the classic. I wish people would run horses past 3. Gives a better idea about who will hold up.

I wish they would too. It's Secretariat who started that trend and it's just gotten worse. Do you remember a filly named Sweet Catomine a few years ago? I mean, this is a broodmare, not a stallion, and they retired her simply because she finished 5th in a race.

I'm just glad we got to see Curlin run at 4, although that never would have happened if there hadn't been legal battles.

I didn't see the Haskell, but I did think Big Brown was a decent horse. Better than Smarty Jones at least (Smarty's Derby time was atrocious, I don't know why he was so hyped). I never bought into the hype with War Emblem, Funny Cide, Smarty Jones...any of those horses. I thought Big Brown might've had a shot at the Triple Crown though. I didn't like his trainer or his owners though.

I guess if a Triple Crown winner does come along, I want them to be something really special, not just some random horse who starts 3 times, wins the Triple Crown, and retires.

I think it might have started out as hate for the trainer on my part. dutrow is a jerk. I also hate when people crown a "super horse" off of 3 starts. That's why I didn't back Dunkirk this year. I may like him down the road when he proves himself, but breeding isn't everything. I love geldings because we get to see them run past 3. Perfect drift won me some money in his long career

I do remember that filly. I didn't realize that's why they retired her. Wonder if this will happen to stardom bound?

If I remember there was this big controversy about it, because they tried to say she was hurt or sick or something and no one bought it. It was weird.

Stardom Bound is already scheduled to be bred to Big Brown, so not sure how long she'll run for.

Someone was saying they liked Dunkirk to win the Derby and I said that you can't just slap down a few million dollars on a horse and expect to win the Derby...excluding Fusaichi Pegasus. And of course a 9000 dollar horse won it. I love that.

So many of those multi million dollar horses turn out to be duds.

I know. I was hoping big brown was infertile. I'm a horrible person. At least ieha stables gets what coming to them sometimes. I loved patena until they paid a shite ton of money for him and moved him to dutrows barn. Then the horse stopped running (and may I add looked awful in the paddock for la derby day). It's good to have the little people win sometimes.

And my mom's friend from college bred fusaichi. They also had menifee, Sunday silence, and gato del sol. Must be nice to marry into a horse dynasty... Even if you marry the black sheep.

That's awesome. Sunday Silence was a pretty amazing horse. That would be pretty cool to work with horses like that.

I dislike Dutrow because he drugs his horses. A few years ago I wrote a 10 page paper on how drugs are affecting the business, especially milkshaking and Bute. I think running a horse on Bute is so dangerous because it masks the horses pain, and therefore the jockey's ability to feel if there is something wrong with the horse.

I also think it's a major problem that horses can't seem to run without Lasix anymore. Even Silver Charm fell apart when he wasn't allowed to run without Lasix in the Dubai World Cup. They rely on it too much.

Does anyone know if Mine that Bird had a record setting pace for like the last 3/8 mile or whatever point he really took off?

you also shouldn't like him cause he's an arrogant prick I totally agree with you on the drugging. It's not often you see a horse run without an L next to their name. I didn't really notice that you couldn't use it in dubai until last week when I told my bf I liked desert party and he was talking about the lasix situation. Bute can also be bad news. I know a lot of people who show on the stuff, and it can be very dangerous for both horse and rider when you are jumping.
