Smart should be reprimanded.
On the other hand, fans attend sporting events to cheer on their teams. It's understood and appreciated that they are going to make noise and get a little rowdy. That's half the fun. Where I get off is when a fan like this dork in Lubbock feels empowered to openly taunt and insult the opposing athletes in close proximity to the basketball court. There is plenty of video and other evidence that he does so and is encouraged by Texas Tech to do so. That is wrong.

I think the fan is saying "sorry bout that" with the wave off motion.

quote:I really hope all he does is have to issue an apology to his school, Texas Tech, and the Big 12, and then whatever punishment his coaches levy on him. If he's suspended for doing something to this piece of garbage fan whose habit of cursing at college students is encouraged by Texas Tech's athletic program, that would be a disgrace. People like Orr are way worse than people like Smart. I say we light our torches and march to Orr's house instead of Smart's dorm.
Agree. And he will be, probably harshly.

Umm, both.
We learn at a young age that putting your hands on people is not the right way to resolve things. He isn't 8.

I'd like to know what he said. Jeez. Even in college we'd talk trash enough to the other team to mess with them but never crossed any line. Many times the opposing teams were laughing with us.

Yea, I'm not getting this what Smart did was ok stuff. Desmond Mason said he was called the n word every game in Lubbock, you can't go confront every arse hole racist fan, even if they deserve it. And Smart lost his mind out of frustration, if Oklahoma State is winning the game last night Smart probably smiles and waves at the guy.

Yea, I'm not getting this what Smart did was ok stuff.
But not only is what Orr did worse, but what Orr is known for doing regularly is worse, and Texas Tech encourages it.
Recap:
Smart did something wrong. Technical foul.
Orr did something worse, and does worse things regularly. Texas Tech encourages this and has a tribute page for him on their official athletics site.
The Smart situation should be left to Travis Ford and the rest of the OSU team. Orr needs to be banned from courtside.

Smart jumps up off the ground at him right away. If he had not done that he wouldn't have been where Orr could raise a hand to him.
I'm not defending Orr, but Smart is responsible for his own actions.

But just as when I was in college I'd never heckle a high school player, as a college grad I'll never heckle a college player. It seems creepy, weird, pathetic, and all in all inappropriate. It's bullying with no muscle. Not my style, and frick anyone whose style it is.

What Orr did worked, he got under the athlete's skin and got him out of the game.
I don't have any idea what kind of language he used to do so, I don't know anything about this "super fan"

Orr being a giant douche who deserves an arse beating is inarguable and it is embarrassing for TT that he's been allowed to do these things and stay in those seats. But I'm referring to everyone who seems to think Smart did the right thing.

quote:In a basketball sense, we all agree he did the wrong thing since the Big 12 rule specifically forbids this and calls for a technical foul to be assessed to the offending player.
But I'm referring to everyone who seems to think Smart did the right thing.
In a moral sense, Smart did about 0.000001% of the damage to Orr that should be done to him.

ESPN just reported that a news reporter heard Smart tell his coach the fan called him the n-word.

In situations like these, I tend to place more blame on the middle aged male as opposed to the teenager
Posted on 2/9/14 at 7:49 am to ballscaster
I haven't said Smart needs more punishment.
But to ban Orr from court side or ban him altogether is going beyond proper punishment I think.
