Not sure what more they expected him to do with their aging roster and shipping draft picks to try to keep the Crosby/Malkin window open.

Sullivan was elevated from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL to be Pittsburgh’s head coach in December of 2015 and went on to lead the team to back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 2016 and 2017. Sullivan’s 409 wins with Pittsburgh make him the Penguins all-time wins leader and just the 14th coach in NHL history to win 400 games with one team.

Is there a profession with more turnover than NHL coaches?

The average tenure for coaches in major professional sports leagues varies. In the NBA, it's roughly 3.7 years, while in the NHL, it's around 2.3 years. NFL coaches tend to stay for 3 years, and in MBB, the average is around 3.2 years.

It's time for a shakeup. Need to dish Malkin and Letang as well. Crosby still has 2-4 years of good play barring some injury.

As much as it could've hurt the fanbase, I think moving Malkin and retaining Guentzel to have a youth core to build around would've been better. I don't think anyone is going to be fortunate enough to develop a core trio (Fleury, Crosby, Malkin) through multiple bad years and lottery luck any time soon. The structure of the bad teams sitting in #1 range year over year aren't getting better.
Anaheim is the only one showing signs of improvement over the past five years being stuck as a bad team, and their rebuild isn't finished yet.
The other end of that is missing the playoffs repeatedly, and always ending up in the bottom half of lottery range, missing out especially in weak draft years.

NBA is worse.
Sullivan was the HC there for 10 years. 2 Cups. That's an eternity by NHL standards
