its a three way race for the cy young in the NL
I would throw Gerrit Cole in the mix. Leads NL in wins. 13-4 with a 2.31 ERA.

It is hard to say anyone is a "slam dunk no-brainer" for an award with the way Paul Goldschmidt is playing.

He has been absolutely awesome, but I still think it is "slam dunk no-brainer". Harper has been clearly the better hitter and provides more defensive value. Goldy has 13 more SBs, but I hardly think that makes up the hitting and defending edge of Harper.
I mean Goldy still has time to pass Harper, but at the midway point I'd say #3 in the race is closer to Goldy than Goldy is to Harper.

No way. The fact that you cannot name #3 in the MVP race is all you need to say.
Harper's oWAR on Fangraphs is 46.6. Goldy is 38.7. Only Mike Trout is also above 30.
According to my cursory glance on Fangraphs, Harper has been an average defender in 2015. Can you give me info that says otherwise? He has been better at the plate thus far and I would vote for Harper, but I don't think it is close to egregious to say Goldy.

An average RF is a more valuable defender than an average or even above average 1B. I'd probably put Scherzer or Greinke at 3 and I do think they are closer to 2, than Goldy is to 1.
No knock on Goldy, all these players are exceptional. It's just that Harper is having a Barry Bonds type year.

Damn. I didn't know Goldy was so good on the basepaths. It may be closer than I thought, I just compared their numbers.

don't forget best fan base of the year: St. Louis Cardinals.

I agree with all this.............

A corner OF is not that high on the defensive spectrum. Out of all the arguments to put Harper out Goldy, defense may be the weakest one. Use defense as an argument for a guy like Trout, Arenado, Donaldson, etc.
Harper has been the best player in baseball, but I think that Goldy is having one of those years that would compare favorably to most peak years of a HOF player.

Miggy and Trout all over again

No doubt, still higher than 1B though. But defense is a minisucle portion of it only. The reason I think Harper is head and shoulders MVP over Goldy is at the plate. Goldy has a wRC+ of 181 (which is fantastic of course), but Harper is at wRC+ of 211. That's a huge gap. Adrian Gonzalez's 153 is closer to Goldy, than Goldy is to Harper.
Now Goldy does have more PAs, so that may shrink the value some, but not near enough to be a worthy choice over Harper.

It'll be highway robbery if Jacob deGrom doesn't win the NL Cy Young. Same for Chris Sale.

Hanley has made me value defense in the corner outfield spots.

deGrom should be your front runner for NL Cy Young. Just look at his performance today AGAINST Greinke. I mean he even drove in the RBI that broke the streak
Did I mention he plays for the Mets, the worst offense in baseball?
